: O-rings in filter adapter

I've noticed lots of activity on the board about the oil cooler lines. However, I've not noticed much about the oil filter adapter (4wd trucks). There are three O-rings on this unit that are VERY easy to replace. If someone is going to all the hassle of changing the cooler lines, it seems almost foolish to me to not replace these o-rings.

I only bring this up because I've had failure in the past. I had a '90 K1500 that dumped all the oil on the road due to a brittle, cracked o-ring on the filter adapter. I caught it before any damage occured, but it could have been a catastrophic day.

The ones on my '95 that I just replaced were all three brittle and hard and broke into pieces upon removal. I'm glad I replaced them. It cost me under $5 for the o-rings at the dealership and should cost me around 30 minutes total after cleaning, removal and reinstalling the adapter.

Just something to think about that could surely be neglected.

I replaced mine at about 125,000 miles because they leaked so bad. Good tip, though.

The material that the O-rings are made of doesn't seem to be able to tolerate the heat. I've replaced many of them. The big o-ring gets brittle and will crack or break when flexed in your fingers. The oil cooler line o-rings are made of a different material and seem much more durable. I buy them from GM in bags of 10. I replace them every time a cooler line is removed, for whatever reason. Gas engines too! Good insurance.

If you do replace them (I did and would recommend it to anyone).

MAKE SURE YOU GET THREE DIFFERENT O-RINGS!!!! The dealer gave me three o-rings, but two of them were the same when each one is different.  I was lucky and a dealer was still open on Saturday afternoon.

I think the o-rings vary from differeny year models, cuz as I recall from doing mine just a couple of months ago, two of the three rings were the same size.
