I was at Diesel power house today in Jax FL picking up a case of stanadyne and they had the current duramax fuel filters on sale for $21. These are the racor fuel filters, the same manufacturer (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=1oh&ei=B8YrS-OyEIjGlAf47_2hBw&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&ved=0CBYQBSgA&q=manufacturer&spell=1) of the ac delco fuel filter for the duramax engine.

I asked what the reason is and the owner told me that GM is releasing a updated fuel filter that has a better micron rating and has larger capacity to filter fuel. He could not tell me much more but he did say that the new filter would cost more.

He said that the filter should be arriving to dealer's at the begining of 2010. Any one got any more info on this new filter??

I went to the Dealer about 1 month ago to get a filter and they wanted $90. I asked why they went up from $35 and he said that they redesigned them. I said said they could keep it.

Yeah, the new filter - TP3012 - has been out since at least March. Do a search.

Yes, you can get the 'new' Racor filters from B-Line Filter and Supply in Texas. Price $28.19 each. Shipped, it's $31 each (if buy three). Racor part number is PFF50216.

Wow, nothing like cutting out the site vendors.

The old Racor fuel filters were 2 micron. I guess Racor felt that 2 micron wasnt necessary.

So what is the bottom line? Is there yet another new filter coming, or is it the one that came out last March? When I first bought my DMax, I bought 4 fuel filters, after changing out the first time, they came out with a new one, then another model. IMO it doesn't pay to keep these in stock since they change the design too often.

The last two wix fuel filters i bought are made out of plastic now.

I can see the + - of plastic. They won't rust, but some guys have stated they have a hard time getting them tight since the plastic gives and is hard to grip.

I don't recall the OEM fuel filters ever being 2 micron. They have always been 4 micron. The high efficiency Cat filters (being used for secondary filtration) and those cross referenced to them are 2 micron.

i run a cat high efficiency right after my lift pumps, then to the OEM. I rarely change the oem filter. The CAT 2 micron has got to be a lot better than the 10micron oem. Why change the oem is its filtering is 5x less than CAT's fuel filters?

The old Racor model was 2 micron, thats the only one I know of. The new coalescer filter is 4 micron though, I guess they found that 2 was overkill.

The new plastic Wix filters are NOT the new filter design from GM. They still use the old paper style element. The new filters from GM are made by Racor and use the coalescer media. We have them with more info on our site for those interested.

DSTRBD, can you elaborate on how the dpeth coalescing media works? I understand it to mean that the media will not absorb the water, instead deflect it off of the media. Is this correct? Ever since I have had my LLY I have had issues with gelling and icing in the filter. I am wondering if the new style will prevent the water from soaking into the paper and freezing. I have never been able to drain any water from my water seperator

FYI, as a former Service/Parts manager. I have seen several WIX/NAPA Gold fuel filters collapes. Made one customer extremely mad. I told him I would put it on free if it did not fix his problem. (after rolling start, a full throttle input truck would stumble hard). After new GM/AC Delco fuel filter truck ran fine. Parts and labor about $130.
