Becarefull adding power and towing.

I limped my tranny 2 days ago. Diablo Predator 65HP pulling a 8000# boat. I have pulled heavier equipment trailers many times before with the same tune, but the boat had much more wind resistance.

I think if you are doing that much towing Banks would be the way to go IMO. I have the Edge Juice w/ Attitude on my truck, I pulled an 11000 lb trailer on level 5 (125hp tune) and it didn't limp. Just have to take it easy in 4th and 5th gear. Edge says to either run it on level 1 (40hp) or 2 (60hp) depending on the weight you are pulling. Haven't really heard anything about Bully Dog tuners, but I would get rid of that superchips, I heard some bad things about thos chips.

The best thing would be a good, custom EFIlive tune, and maybe a transgo kit just to be safe. But thats just me.

You dont have to buy the programmer, check out duramaxtuner.com
And a few diesel shops have it too.

With all the mods already on your unit, I'd sure consider an exhaust gas temperature gauge. Not as expensive as a new tuner. Keep it below 1200 degrees at the exhaust manifold, for long haul towing. Allow 1600 for only a few seconds drag racing. With the EGT gauge you could play with the different tunes on your tuner.
The Superchips tow tune is 40 horse over stock, if I remember right, which I use all the time. The Tow/performance tune (65 over) maybe be workable and do a better job if you can watch the EGT. Then the trany may become the problem. The performance tune (125 over) will get very expense, very quick. A quick run down a short road. All tuners making big power need a lot of mods to your unit, for the tune to be workable.
Towing the pictured unit at 12,000 on the trailer, and 21,500 gross combination, I have made four long round trips plus other trips including one of 16,000 miles to the Maritimes, and New England states with no problems. I run the RPM between 1600 & 2200, seldom pinning the throttle, running cool, and saving a bit of fuel also. I don't win any races, but I don't stop to fix either. See my sign below.

Do you guys running tuners in tow tune have problems turning the side of your trailers black from the smoke? I have a Diablo Predator that I unloaded because of that.

I pull a 14000lb 5er every weekend. I run bully dog on tow tune, usually get black smoke on the side of the trailer if I floor it, I keep the defuel level set at 1300 on the tuner, and watch the EGTs, most of the time I found if you roll into slowly it does not smoke much keep my revs at 2000rpms. very happy with the tuner and it has the moniter with it so you can watch everything as you go, easy set up and you can change the tune on the fly, with any tuner and towing you should improve your intake and exhaust it makes a big difference to the LLY motor,

getting the RIGHT tuner is going to be a personal opinion, they all have their good and bad, look at my sig, I run the PPE and edge stacked PPE on 4 and Edge on 2 and dont have any issues and I pull a 12000lb 5th wheel also, each guy likes something differant, good luck

There is nothing wrong with the superchips tuner, I have had it since 04 truck was new and have had zero problems. I once had the same itch as you but I would just stay with it until your modding more.I tried 3 other big name tuners trying to keep egt's down, but after loading/timing rattle problems and even higher egt's, stayed with the superchips. FYI I tow a huge toyhauler and other trailers. EFI live is great if you like playing:)

No transmission upgrades?? I would have burnt my tranny up by now running what you are... lol

I am running a BD rapid power box. I run it all the time at the 40 HP setting and it works well, I tow two pulling tractors that combined weigh about 9,000 lbs and the trailer weighs in at 5000 lbs, so pulling ~14 to 15,000 pretty often , I have plenty of power with the box on 40 hp setting, the manual says it has tranny smart software, not sure what that means, but I havent had the tranny do anything bad or act weird, I do want to put in a pyro soon. I didnt want to put a real expensive unit on, because the truck will pull fine stock IMO, I have run the 103 hp setting and I dont think its really that good unless you are using it beyond speeds of 60 then hitting it, the 40 hp tow setting seems to have plenty of get and go for me. also have the other stuff done in my sig. They too were cheap mods with what I feel gave me good gains, with reliability.

not yet, everything seems to be ok, the shop that does all of my work has recommended doing a tourqe converter and valve body which would run me about 2k, so am thinking about doing that this year and also doing the FAS 190gpm system

You will need more help than a torque convertor-- the clutches are part of the problem. If you are pulling the trans- at least put in a full TransGo kit, of course a Suncoast III kit would be better.

The valve body is a waste of money (IMHO)

thanks for the info, I am going to do some research before jumping into this, and besides it will have to be after the holidays, probably before spring and we start pulling the camper a bunch.

I limped my tranny to it's death with the EDGE on level 2 and one big A$$ trailer towing "easy" around 55-65 mph in rolling hills with the cruise on.

Remember with cruise enabled, the tranny will not downshift as easily in Tow/Haul mode. That is what did me in.

I now have a Suncoast IV and my issues are no longer.

Yeah i limped mine i think 3 times, but i was being stupid and playing around with it. I am going to put the ATS stage 2 in it beginning of next year, then i am going to get EFI live. And your right about the cruise thing, I hardly but mine in cruise so I don't have a problem there.

yeah i been thinkin bout stackin but i dunno yet and i have a bull dog shift kit that i need to put in really want more power and seems like superchips dont help much with my turbo lag that i hate and want to see if i can get somemore mpgs

There is a sticky in the Allison Aftermarket section on the Bully Dog Shift kit, you might want to check it out.

I find the turbo lag discussion rather intreiging.
From a no fuel situation, to a call for full fuel, throws the ECM, the emission contols, and the smoke free ideas into a tizzie.
Even in stock form, the turbo needs fuel/heat to spool up, but the ECM will not pour the fuel on until there is enough air to burn the fuel. Takes a bit of time. Chipped/programmed the loop takes long to go round until there is full air and the corresponding fuel.
If you never totally shut the fuel off ( no pedal pressure), the lag will be much much less. Why do drag racers spool up BEFORE the green light?
Driving diesels for forty plus years, I've learned when rolling, seldom use full or no throttle even when changing gears.

For a stock tranny, Hypertech, IIRC, advertises that you can tow with their top tune and they swear you won't limp your tranny.
