Hello:

Does anyone have any front images of an LB7 or know of some? I think mine tossed an idler wheel in that there is a bolt with nothing attahed to it and obviously the belt went shortly after. I'm not sure what this missing wheel looked like.

You don't appreciate power steering until it's gone and you feel like you're steering a 747 with no hydraulics, lol....

Thanks

Is it the one just below the alt?

IIRC, there are two idlers just below the alternator, pretty close together. If you only have one, then theres the problem.

Yeahhhhh, I just saw a pic. Looks like the RH idler had enough and fell a part.

Thanks for the help

I would replace both of them at the same time. I had one go out last year and today I just blew out the second one....and it does suck driving without powersteering, especially when you just got 20" of snow dumped on you and ya gotta drive through it to make it home :(

Yikes that sucks. Were you able to save your belt? Our idler blew apart leaving only a bolt and inner race. As a result it destroyed the belt and took out a couple blades on the fan.

We replaced both at the same time, though now I'm curious if we need to change the tensioner? Can you get just the pulley? I thought I read somewhere that you can only get plastic replacement wheels.

I replaced one of the two almost exactly one year ago on my '02 and the other one went on me last night. I got the one I replaced through my friend's garage last year but he's not open tomorrow. Anyone have a suggestion as to where I should get one, and a belt too? I have a NAPA, AdvanceAuto, and PepBoys all close by and they are open tomorrow.

I think all of them will have belts. Not sure on pullies.... GM belt number fro single alt is 97300653. Good luck. I'm looking to replace teh tensioner as well next. Not sure if anyone has pullies for this.

Idler pulley Item Number: 98072072 - 19.05 ea
Tensioner tem Number: 38172 - 85.00ea

I bought both of these items after researching the forum and finding a link to Merchant Automotive online. They were cheaper than NAPA even w/ my 10% discount. Delivery was fast.

Not promoting or advertising, my power steering pump went out, so while I was swapping that out I changed all my pullies. They were 7yrs old and questionable.

Hope this helps

You guys seem to have better luck than me when mine chucked the idler it went through the fan and that in turn went through the radiator. Which ended up being about a $600 fix for a $20 idler.

the idlers are stealer only but they are cheap around 17 bucks each

I was really cheap, I simply went to NAPA and bought 2 replacement bearings and swapped the bearings out. Cost me less than $10 to replace them and about 10 minutes on the press to do it.

The GM idler pully part number is 98072072, about $20 each.
I tried buying these at three different auto parts stores and none had the correct pulley, (which has a spacer with dust shield pressed inside of bearing).

I also replaced the bearings in the tensioner pulley. More info below at post #22:

How big of a deal was it to replace the tensioner bearing??? Is it in so tight that you need a press or can it be hammered out with a hammer and socket?

VERY easy with a 20 ton press. I'd expect it easy with an arbor press.
Not sure if a hammer and socket could potentially damage bearing or not.

When on gm parts direct it says that the pn 9807-2072 is for a water pump.

My records show GM #98072072 is the correct P/N for the idler pulley.
Merchant sells them:
