: Duramax dismay!!! :(
Rangeley 06-08-2005, 04:02 PM Hello All,
I am a newbie.
I bought an 01 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLT Duramax/Allison extra cab long bed 27K miles almost two years ago. Since I've owned it, it has been back to the dealer twice for shift problems (stuck in 2nd or 3rd). Once for being stuck in 4X4. It leaked water through the roof console into my coffee cup (and still does on occasion) and in sub zero weather almost stranded me in the mountains at 2am due to fuel gel. Its been in for bogging down when entering highway speeds (clogged fuel filter). It just goes on and on.
Now, last week it broke down 200 miles from home. I noticed the oil pressure was low so i stopped to check oil and it was empty so i added 6 quarts (3 at a time) before it would show on the stick. When I started it back up, it puked what looked like oil and diesel out the bottom of the motor. The tow cost me 500.00!!!!
Its now been in the shop for past 9 days and they think its the injectors.
When its running good there is no better truck on the road but, man i've about had it with this one!!!
habanero 06-08-2005, 04:39 PM If the injectors are leaking fuel in the crankcase, the dipstick will not show it as empty. The reason it pukes out is it is too full. This story smells fishy.
Kennedy 06-08-2005, 04:41 PM Sorry to hear about the injectors, but to be blunt the rest of it sounds minor. Fuel gelling/filter plugging is certainly not the truck's fault...
A new set of injectors and all should be well again.
Is your truck equipped with roof lights, and were they installed when new or after delivery?
Rangeley 06-08-2005, 04:48 PM roof lights are factory and its leaking from center light obviuosly its just dealer had twice for same problem and it still leaks once in a while.
Rangeley 06-08-2005, 04:53 PM I don't understand it either nor does the dealer but at this point they say there are replacing injectors so we'll see.
aprr454 06-08-2005, 06:19 PM Don't take this the wrong way but most of it sounds like poor maintenance. 6 quarts low on oil is not exceptable unless the drain plug fell out. A plugged fuel filter is either a tank of bad fuel or lack of changing the filter. Fuel gelling is not the engines fault. I'm not picking on you to be a prick, it just sounds like half the problem is maintenance or lack of.
Maxter 06-08-2005, 07:42 PM All the problems your describing are common, I had them. When your shifter is stuck in nd or 3rd, it's either phycal ice in the was or your NBSU switch. I'm at my 3rd switch but this new design one seems to hold. Faulty actuator got me stuck un 4x4 as well. Some other poeple had the same problem. I also think there was a recall for the leaking roof console, mine did that too. Your truck is covered by the 7/200 waranty on injectors. In my case when they died, it costed my 685$ in towing and I had GM pay for it.
dozerboy 06-08-2005, 07:57 PM Welcome to DP Rangeley
I think you need to check you oil more often too. Moreover, you guys need to join AAA last time I broke down they towed me 83 mi. When I couldn't fix it, they towed it a shop, and when they couldn't fix they towed it to another shop all for $60 a year.
MrsSpoolin 06-08-2005, 08:35 PM We have towing coverage through our insurance. We got towed over 100 miles, didn't cost anything.
Maxter 06-08-2005, 09:49 PM When the engine is full of fuel instead of oil (because of a faulty injector), oil doesn't really show on the dipstick so it "may" look like your low on oil. 6 quarts missing is enough to trigger the low oil warning IMHO. I also had a bad PCV Valve once and it puked a quart of oil every 100km.
Just trying find some possible cause.
WanaDmxsub 06-08-2005, 10:29 PM Rangeley-When my injectors leaked, the first time I checked the oil I also thought it was dry. It was actually full of fuel. The stick/cable is not easy to read under the best of conditions. Change your fuel filter at regular intervals and find a new gas station that sells large quantities diesel (summer diesel will gel in the winter). Your truck will feel new with the new injectors the only problem you might have now is if the tech screw's up the install. Most have done this enough that it shouldn't be a problem (H@ll, some can do it with a blindfold on...) Try and talk to the tech and see how many times he's had to do this. They usually aren't as prone to spit out the company line ("never seen that before, maybe you should trade it in for a new one")
Rangeley 06-09-2005, 09:44 AM You guys are right on maintenance. I will be paying much more attention to filters, oil levels etc from now on. Does anybody have a recommeded maintenance schedule of what to change and when for the duramax? Or, maybe recommend a good duramax maintenance manual? My truck didn't come with one.
I appreciate all your honest opinions, and great forum!!
CStone 06-09-2005, 01:12 PM In the "Do It Yourself" section of the forum is a well-constructed PM schedule for the Duramax-equipped truck.
Rangeley 06-09-2005, 03:56 PM Hey guys I just got the truck back, no charge!! They replaced all injectors and it runs reel well now, noticable difference!! :)

Maxtor, I bought my 02' last month, so should my injectors be cover if they happen to go bad? If so where can I find out this info.
