: Front Wheel Hubs; '02 K2500
Seawolf34 12-15-2009, 10:32 PM Had my oil changed this summer. The "technician" said my LF wheel hub was a a tad loose but should be ok for a while. Had oil changed, fuel filter replaced and wheels aligned today. This time tech indicated both front hubs are loose and should be replaced ($1100). Did not, yet!
I'm towing a 13k 5th wheel 2100 miles, 2 weeks from now, and will do something about the hubs, one way or another, before departing. I don't have any reason to be "skeptical" about the finding......but, I feel there's a need for input other than the dealer's.
I do not personally do any maintenance on my truck (age 68), so have to trust others. Should I get a second opinion, or maybe lift the the wheels myself and check the security? Problem with that is that I have no idea when the hub is considered to be normal vs. loose (unless grossly obvious).
If I get a 2nd opinion should it be a diesel mechanic (in consideration of the diesel engine's extra mass) or will any experienced mechanic suffice?
Thanks for the advice (in advance).
heymccall 12-15-2009, 10:44 PM $200 a side in parts and many say they can be done in under an hour per side. I average about 1.25 hour per side, but I have no lift.

Brimfield 12-16-2009, 10:45 AM Did mine this summer and it took just over 1.5 hours per side and I had never done this before. Hubs on ebay were $135 a piece. As far as who can check this out for you any honest shop could. If you have AAA give the local offfice a call and ask for shops they recomend.
Seawolf34 12-16-2009, 08:36 PM .....for y'all's input.
I contacted a repair place with which I had done business yrs ago. Trusted them then, and finding the manager is still there, can trust them now. He said the job is not that difficult (as y'all commented) and his ballpark estimate was like the pitcher's mound compared to the dealer's center-field fence (a bit of an exaggeration:rolleyes:).
Any way, if he shows me that the hubs need replacing, then it's a done deal.
Brimfield; great tutorial. If I had the time and a heated garage I might be tempted to give it a go myself. But alas, my professional aircraft mechanic days are 45+ yrs behind me and I don't have the tools or patience.

I dont blame you at all Sea Wolf 34. the center nut took a 36 mm socket and a 3ft breaker bar, I added a cheater pipe to get em off and was bending the breaker bar. I only had one bad one but I go with the idea that if one is bad the other is right behind it and while I am into it, do both sides. I hope SeaWolf 34 that your mechanic got it done for a fair price.

SP580311 DRW
The subject part number is superseding the SP580304, SP580305, and the SP580306. This supersession is currently being implemented because Timken is the original equipment supplier of the GMT900 system 3 (2008) as well as the original equipment service provider for the GMT800 system 3 (1999-2007). By superseding to this new SP580310 part number, it allows you to utilize newer technologies for the older applications.
The SP580310 hub unit bearing looks very similar to the previous SP580304. The only apparent difference is the Roll FormŽ on the inboard side of the hub. Note: The SP580310 retro fits back through model year 1999.

A local mechanic quoted me $350 per bearing plus $200 in labor!
I ended up buying both sides from dmaxstore. My buddy and I had them done in less than 2 hours.
STLCHEVYHD 03-08-2012, 05:45 PM I bought both sides from Dmaxstore a month ago. I had a buddy, who's a GM tech, do it one Saturday morning at his dealership. I gave him a Benjamin and he had it done in 1.5 hrs. He couldn't believe the price that I got them for.
