Hey I have an 05 Dmax ext cab 4wd and I consistenly hear a hollow sounding rattle or thump whenever Im decelerating from about 40 mph to about 20 mph coming from the front suspension when crossing over imperfections or small bumps in the road. Anyone else hear this????
It reminds me of the sound of a ball joint goin out or a loose shock. I took it to the dealership to see if they could hear it and they had two mechanics drive it, of course they didnt hear it! They just looked at me like I was nutz..... Any confirmation on my insanity is welcome!

Started doing it for no reason at 4500 miles(always running lite-no load) I hear it when coming to a stop only applying the brakes under 20 mph to 2 mph,The noise is on the right side under hood about where the top front shock would be or the inner fender top.A hollow deep bass rattle sound..I'm afraid the dealer will jack me around like they always do.

Recently installed Bilsteins -probably not the shocks. I just recently started hearing a similar klunking sound when decelerating and going over bumps at low speed. Will investigate today.

Hopefully the source of the noise you hear will be as easy to remedy as mine was.
I just started experiencing this noise while going over small bumps and driving slow or while slowing down.
My hood adjustment screws w/rubber bump stops located at each corner of the hood were loose and backed down so far the hood would bump up and down creating the knocking noises. Only audible while going slow due to less road noise.
I removed the bump stops and placed a 10mm nut on them, adjusted the hood and then locked them in place. No more knockin' & rattlin' noises. :)

I did notice that when I lifted the hood, the rubber stops were a little loose. Riverchucky, you could have the remedy right there! I will try the 10mm nut idea, thanks..Matt

It really sounded like a front suspension noise. Raise the stops just enough to where the hood doesn't make the noise when shaking the corners up & down. BTW, that 10mm nut is the wrench size, I think it's actually a 6mm thread nut. There's also another thread in this section referring to a similar noise.
Good luck you guys!
Good luck

Intermediate shaft? Do you have nerf-bars?

On a previous truck that I owned I had replaced the shocks. Almost every time I hit a bump or decelerated sharply I was getting a sharp clicking sound from my front end. I went around the truck jumping up and down on the bumpers until I found it. The lower bolt on one of the shocks was slightly undersized and was moving up and down in the spacer. I replaced the bolt and life was good again

It is usually something simple, I.E. bushings on the sway bar.

Go over everything under your truck.

The lower bolt on one of the shocks was slightly undersized and was moving up and down in the spacer. I replaced the bolt and life was good again My truck does the same thing after I installed RS9000's. The bushing/sleeve ID is slightly larger than the OEM bolt OD and the shock slops up and down creating a clunking sound. I have tightened the bolts *tight* and it stayed quiet for a while but is doing it again. I am going to find larger dia. bolts or a thicker wall bushing when I get around to it.

Yesterday while turning Left into a parking space It sounded like the front axle was going to lock up or fall apart.Louder turning Left then to the Right,Can't hear it going Right I was moving at 2 mph and had wheels turned and pushed the brake and wow was it rattleing and clunking. Now whats so hard about what could it be?:help: It almost reminds me of the anti lock brakes doing quick little grabs-shutters.Could it be CV joint going bad with only 4500 miles?

Today aired down tires to 67 lbs from 75 on front of 3500 SRW (265's)and saw somw weepage film of grease on top of upper A-arms both sides.Noise in front end isn't as noticeable now.Still wonder what makes it?
