I have an 06 LLY. I was wondering what kinds of fuel additives people use. I have noticed my pick up smoking a little more then usual whenever it lugs down. My fuel economy has gone down a little also, but now that it is colder outside, I leave it idleing more often, so i'm sure that has a little to do with it. I don't think that it could be injector issues because it doesn't smoke while idleing and the smoke that comes out is black. I checked my K and N filter, and it looks perfectly fine. I was wondering what kinds of injector cleaner additives are the best or anything other ideas.

I have used this Amsoil concentrate and cold flow performance (http://www.amsoil.com/catalog.aspx?Code=DFCCN-EA&zo=1747262) and had very good luck- I have also used Stanadyne in the past and had no issues.

Power Services also has a good fuel additive.

I use Stanadyne. If your referring to the K&N as your air filter and is and oiled type one then pull the MAF and clean it with some MAF cleaner. Those type of air filters can cause MAF issues.

will that cause it to smoke a little bit more or worse fuel mileage??

You might consider adding 1/2oz of 2 cycle oil per gallon of fuel. Really quiets down the engine and makes it run smoother. I add 2 cycle oil to every fill up.

I believe that it may cause it to smoke a little more, and it will hurt the mileage for sure!!!!!!!!!!!

I use power supply diesel kleen and noticed that my mpg went up a couple of 1/10ths and the truck seems to idle smoother. Now for the colder climate I used power supply 911 when I was in PA and as soon as I dumped it in the tank it fired right up. Power supply has my vote for fuel additives. The black smoke issue your having could be caused by a number of different things. Lack of air, stuck open injector, failed turbocharger, misreading maf, just to name a few and many more contribute to black smoke. I'm assuming you have a stock truck by looking at your post with no sig.

only thing I have done to it is straight pipe it and then the k and n filter. Air should be fine, I checked my filter and it's still clean, the injector, I don't know about, turbo is fine (we have a pick up with a wiring harness issue that is not telling the turbo when to kick in and when it's not working, it is definately obvious, I think I could recognize that). I added an additive that we add to tractor fuel at the beginning of this tank and that seemed to have been the problem. It just smokes like a regular diesel now (just when you really put your foot in it or if it's under heavy lug) and the mileage seems to have gone up. I still might clean the MAF sensor like somebody was saying.

Why is no one mentioning the fuel additive study done by member SPICER with the help of others (see http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=177728&highlight=fuel+additive+study )?

As the result of that study, I'm still using the Opti-Lube XPD that excelled in that research and am happy with the result. I found a local home-based seller here in the San Diego area and have buying it from him ever since I switched.:D

I run Stanadyne performance formula year round every tank.No issues at all. I just got my best all time mileage on a trip from Chicago to Pittsburgh,22.3 mpg hand calculated,65-70 mph and 39 degrees outside temp.

Hey Guys!
Well I have been watching these posts for a bit now, and the last post has brought me out of the "just watching and seeing and learning" phase, but now it is time to act. I sure do wish I knew about that testing for the additives as well. If there is a way for me to get our products in for that test, please let me know who to contact. Most of the fuel additives out there say they improve lubricity, and adding oil, tranny fluids, of any kind will not help out, in the long run, despite the tests that have been done by a single person to a group of people who do that for a living. None, and I mean none, have a metal conditoner, (which ours is a high pressure lubricant), added to them that actually treats the Fuel Injectors tips at the same time, (PENETRATING the surface of them). If whoever did those tests with the additives, will get ahold of me, lets talk. Do not get me wrong, some of the products out there are good, but we have tested against EVERYTHING that is out there, and even tried some of the old fashioned remedies that some have invented themselves, and their is nothing out there that competes with us. So, whoever I need to talk to, please guys, allow me this info so I can allow some eyebrows to raise and knock off some socks as well. I would post my web site, but I don't think that is allowed at this time, and since I just signed up, I do not want to lose out in membership my first post. I will be waiting.
GOD BLESS!!

LCJ113: uhuh...1 post and it's the "super duper best ever most incredible - it even beats out out KY Jelly." Take me to your leader.!!

ya know what..?? nothing personal but Beat it Sunshine...no-one on here wants to hear it. . been watching these posts for a bit now .. yet your sign on was 2 weeks ago ..?? Buddy, you are a day late and a dollar short and coming on hear shilling for an unknown company with an unknown product with fantastic claims just makes my Bullshit antenna stand up...K? Suggest you take your fancy lube and go penetrate something else..capiche.??

For the rest...

The Independant study on lubricity was commisioned By one of our members (Spicer) and performed by an outside laboratory with absolutely no ties to any oil company or other entitiy involved in selling additives to the diesel industry. The samples were suggested by undreds of the members here and to my mind was a fairly good and broad look at what was commercially available at the time of the study. Using ASTM approved testing methedology, it showed conclusively that BioD was by far the best additive going. Note: For lubricity..not mpg or anything else. Unfortunately we cant get BioD up here in Canada, at least for the most part. So like many, I use what I consider 2nd best: Power Service Diesel Kleen. White bottle in the summer and grey in the winter....

You might consider adding 1/2oz of 2 cycle oil per gallon of fuel. Really quiets down the engine and makes it run smoother. I add 2 cycle oil to every fill up.

completely agreed.! I add 2 stroke to my Power service at a ratio of 1/2 Qt to a gallon of PS. It should be noted that in the lubricity study, 2stroke came out ahead of many of the "on the shelf" self styled super additives.

I am glad that you really are that intelligent to answer the way that you did streakmen. My friends who are a part of this place, (well over your time here) have told me that I should have been posting and getting involved with the forums since 2006, but as usual, people like you who come and say your cuss words and think that it's okay to shut us "1 posters" down by your knowledge...well, most of the others will get my point. I never said it was the "super best ever" dude. I asked to see where and who I can contact about getting our product tested with the others. Since it's pretty obivious that you never went to see who I am and then went to my web site under my profile, you wouldn't know that the products have been around for over 30 years. It's really nice to know as well what you do with your lubricants up there in canada also. Son, most of us in this business total in our company combines with over 100 plus years of knowledge and, wait, here it comes, "EXPERIENCE".
Since I saw this one forum and was just looking at it, (have been watching and reading since 2006 Jr.) and read what they were saying and then when I saw the link to the testing that was done, didn't you happen to notice that I was gladly ready to get it tested up against the others??? Hmm. Well since I don't want to lower myself any further than you did to yourself, Streakman, and I would never want to be on the level of your inteligence either, I will still await and try to contact the guys who ran the testing. Now if you can answer me as to how I can get ahold of them, that would be great steakman, but if you want to just come in and announce what you don't know, well.....oops, almost went to that level again, but thanks for the reply anyway.

well aside from all the fighting, I went ahead and bought some of the Power Services treatment. I realized that this is what we had been adding in all our farm equipment for years, because I got it down at our local Co-op. This afternoon, I was in a bit of a hurry and got on it pretty good and my check engine light popped up. Everything seems to be running fine, that I can tell. Could this stuff have caused something?? I don't have a diagnostic checker, but i'll go rent one this weekend and get the code from it. I also am having issues with my service air bag light. It is very random about the way it pops up and leaves. Sometimes I won't see it for months, sometimes it won't leave. It's one of the connections under the seat I believe and the mechanic wants an arm and a leg to fix it. I saw an ad on here to buy some program to just over ride it. Are those scams?? or do they work.?? it seemed reasonable, like 30 bucks or something.

Ditto. I used another brand before switching to XPD and discovered it actually does increase mileage 1 to 1.5 mpg.
