Now that it's zero outside my fan is acting up. When parked at idle the fan clutch will engage for a few seconds and then disengage for a few seconds then engage again over and over and over. Is this normal?? it's really annoying!

Also, for those of us up here in the frigid north, how long does it take your trucks to warm up to normal operating temp? (just under the 210 mark) it seems like my truck takes forever...20-30 mins of normal driving.

Thoughts?

My fan engages for about 5 miles when I first get moving when its really cold. Its to help warm up the engine. But with my winter cover on it takes me about 8 or so miles at highway speeds to get warm. Stop and go city traffic takes a while to heat up.

sounds good but does your fan cycle on and off? mine is cycling on and off while idling. it cycles over and over when it is about 20 or below out no matter how warm the engine is.

Sounds like the hydraulic clutch fan is probably toast, someone had a really good write up on how these work. Search hydraulic clutch and see what comes up.

Mine never engages at these low temps, been hovering around -30 to -15 deg C ambient for the past week.

i kinda figured it was on it's way out... i guess the question now is how much and how easy is it to replace?

Consider the V2 Fan Upgrade, if you don't pull heavy loads. All electric, gives you some from HP and isn't as load. Do a search and you'll find the information you want.

Fan is very easy to replace, not sure on cost though.

I think my clutch fan is on it's way out to, it cycles every 30- 60 seconds but i never hear it while driving any ideas ? If i was considering all eletric what would you suggest the DIY taurus 3.8 l fans ?? or go with an aftermaket company ? and can i still run the stock rad with an eletric setup ?

I don't have an electric setup so I wouldn't be the one to ask, but you will still keep your stock rad.

I would go with the ones from cool my duramax if your not conformable making your own. Its easy to replace the fan ya just need a large wrench and give it a few wackes with a hammer.

My Opinion-- The clutch fan housing has fluid between two disks in the housing and will activate the fan at first start up. After the fluid temperature is a little warmer, the fluid will not be as dense and the fan will disengage. If the temperature is cold, the fluid will gell up again and engage the fan, and then disengage as the gell gets warm again. The cold air is blowing over the housing when it is really cold. I believe this will be a normal operation and there is nothing wrong.

I suggest you wait until it is warmer and then watch the operation.

Not to be indifferent, but what??????????? Are you kidding me.

I might add that the operation of the fan is controlled by a bi-metal thermo spring in the front of the clutch fan- closest to the radiator-- when there is enough heat on the spring, it twists the shaft and brings the two disks together for a full lockup.

I was explaining why the fan is dragging and then unlocking- it is the fluid, and it is not locking because the temperature is to cold for the spring to activate the disks-- and you don't need a fan in very cold weather.

Most use a winter cover on the trucks to assist in warming them in cold weather.

Hey, my truck (04 EC/SB/LLY) does the same thing when it is cold. The fan comes on for about 15 seconds, and then off. I really only noticed it when it got cold out. Do you have a winter cover on your truck? I doubt it has anything to do with your hyd fan going to chit.

Normal for the fan to cycle some when it's cold guys. Mine does it every morning and the fan works fine in the summer.

It's normal for it to cycle at idle, even at cold temps, don't waste money on a new fan to hear it do the same thing.

Yeah, I figured it was nothing more than an annoyance. Thanks guys. I do have a winter cover, but don't use it most of the time...only if it is going to be in the 10's or colder, plus it is a PITA to take off and put back on for car washes, etc.

Hey Superboy95, I'm pretty sure your truck was my inspiration for getting H2's:thumb: Check out my garage...
