: LB7 Predator Question
CStone 06-07-2005, 04:01 PM Anyone here been running an LB7 Predator on 65HP for a long period of time? If so, any problems?
The reason for my inquiry is that the ol' Seat of the Pants meter says my truck doesn't go like it used to. Now, I could be getting used to the 65HP setting, which I've had now for 3 months, but I'm not sure. Started at 40HP for about a month, then stepped to 65HP. No drag racing, no power braking, no flogging, nothing more than normal driving with an occasional full throttle takeoff. Since first day or so, shifting has been tight and quick. No flaring or long shifts.
Depending on the responses I get, I'm either going to go up to 85HP :ro), or down to 40HP. BTW, I've got a stock tranny.
moakster 06-07-2005, 05:02 PM Dont worry about the seat of your pants feel. After some time you get used to what your truck is doing and feel that it is not enough. I have the predator set on 65HP and have to check some times to make sure that I know it's there. The power is there even when you think that you are lagging. Just to compare go ahead and bump it up to 120 and run it a short time ( stpo short of 5th, stock tranny) and then bring it back down. It will show you the difference.
RedRiceEater 06-08-2005, 04:21 PM step on up to the next level :D
CStone 06-09-2005, 09:03 AM RedRiceEater
Just curious, but how long have you ran your truck with the 85HP tune, mileage wise?
Max Payne 06-09-2005, 10:40 AM How is your fuel filter?
CStone 06-09-2005, 01:48 PM Max Payne
Thanks for the response! FYI, fuel filter gets changed every 5k, along with oil (Delo400), oil filter (AC2232), chassis lube, etc. I buy fuel at local truck stop that moves alot of product, plus I've cut each filter apart and media still looks good each time. I'm up for a change this weekend as I'll hit 25k probably tomorrow. Also, I changed allison spin-on @ 5k along with rear-end fluid (to Mobil1 syn).
hdd-max 06-09-2005, 04:46 PM I have ran mine at 85 for the last 40,000 miles with a stock trans.
RedRiceEater 06-10-2005, 02:42 AM 7500 miles
I've limped it 3 times. Those times were out of stupidity really. I hope to get a tranny soon and then move on up in power.
CStone 06-10-2005, 09:00 AM Thanks for the feedback, guys!
RedRiceEater 06-15-2005, 01:15 AM This may help you make the decision. I just did my first full tank on open roads. Cruising at 80-85 mph. I pulled in 22.16 mpg on the 85 setting.
CStone 06-15-2005, 12:46 PM Checked by hand or the DIC? My DIC says 23-24MPG when in fact I'm getting about 18-19'ish when calculated by personal trip meter vs. fuel to refill (up to top of neck).
RedRiceEater 06-15-2005, 09:57 PM by hand, my truck is a girl lol it doesn't have a dic
BlueDMax 06-18-2005, 02:00 PM A quick test is just time yourself 0-60. You'll find a big difference between stock and 65HP. I like the 40 & 65HP settings and they seem pretty safe Allison-wise. I generally leave it on 65. Frankly, IMHO, the 85HP doesn't seem as smooth and several people have noted (stock) tranny limping in 85HP setting.

Thanks for the input.
mike20032500hd 08-29-2005, 03:57 AM what version 1.10 or 1.11 ???
benz_020 08-30-2005, 02:31 AM dont know who is talking about mpg but on the 85 tune
30mpg hwy yes 30 even!!!!!!! avg over 25mpg
but i have 22.5's which is equivalent to having stock wheels with a 3.10 axle ratio
Slick 08-30-2005, 07:39 AM Your rim size doesn't have anything to do with axle ratio. Its your tire size.:) I seriously doubt you got 30 MPG especially in a dually.
benz_020 08-30-2005, 09:50 AM Your rim size doesn't have anything to do with axle ratio. Its your tire size.:) I seriously doubt you got 30 MPG especially in a dually.
i said equivalent to stock wheels with a 3.10 ratio.
and, if i said it gets 30mpg it gets 30mpg, ill bring my camera with me today and take a pic.
also, you can leave the high tune installed(your not supposed to for other reasons) and you should never have trouble with your trans, if you do the power probally is not the initial cause
the trany can take 900lb in1-4 and over 680 in 5
the preditor dose not enought power to excede that even with new intake and/or larger exhaust.
Slick 08-30-2005, 02:58 PM I guess I don't get what your saying. Running larger tires(not rims) is the only way to change your axle ratio. A 33" tall tire is a 33" tall tire, whether its on a 17 inch rim or a 22.5". Also, if your going by your DIC MPG calculator, they are notorious for being wrong. Try hand calculating it, I bet you will be surprised.
RedRiceEater 08-30-2005, 05:36 PM I think he's saying he changed his gear ratio and has a tire height relatively close to the height of the stock 245s. If that's the case I'm sure the 30mpg statement is true.
benz_020 08-31-2005, 01:12 AM personal is my highway average
for today
the other its the average for city and highway driving total
about 50/50 city/hwy, when you consider time
if you think miles then obviously hwy is a little more.
they are notorious for being wrong
mine is almost on the dime
calculations can vary with the gallons used to fill the tank, so
its correct
if yours isnt then youve got a problem.
Wow, this cant be any easier to understand
i kinda feel sorry for you ******, not really
il say it again a little slower
equivalent .........to .........stock .......wheels ........with ........a .......3.10 ........ratio.
the tire size dose not matter cause the equivalency is given
the statement of the rim size is an obvious fact declaring that the wheels are bigger than stock.
if you must know the size is 36", but that is not relevant. all need info was given.
never said anything about having stock wheels
never said anything about changing the ratio
if people still dont understand i dont care
here are the pics as i said...
RedRiceEater 08-31-2005, 01:24 AM Sorry for pissing you off but your wording was very poor. As for your attitude, it won't get you far with most people.
Heartbeat Hauler 08-31-2005, 02:20 AM Easy Benz we're just tryin' to figure out what you are sayin'. I think what you are saying is that the height of your tires ON the 22.5" rims is = to running stock height tires with a 3.10 gear ratio....right? And, because you have taller tires (36") that makes the truck run (lower RPMs) like it has a 3.10 rear....and gives you the 30mpg. Do we have a winner?:D
JP
RedRiceEater 08-31-2005, 02:26 AM Yes we do.
Burnin Mad Max 08-31-2005, 03:27 AM Huh? Must have a Katrina sized tailwind!!! Something must be wrong with my calculator then because on the 85Hp setting with 35" tires I get about 12 to 15 MPG. Of course I get those numbers by dividing miles traveled by gallons I can fit into the tank. Go figure. I guess I need a new calculator, although it sure costs me a lot of dough to go a short distance. Hmmm. And my GPS says the odometer is accurate. Wow, I'm buying a new calculator tommorow so I can get better mileage too.
benz_020 08-31-2005, 11:55 PM Sorry for pissing you off but your wording was very poor. As for your attitude, it won't get you far with most people.
ya ya ya :p:
was, tired grumpy and P.O.ed at some one who lied, and some other stuff
not at you guys
you guy's just got the bad end, :( sry rice eater
Heartbeat Hauler
i think you got it!!!!
Burnin Mad Max;
has your speedo been adjusted?
if it hasent your milage is off too, shhhh,,,,dont tell but..... my truck says about 28k and it really has about 33k and i can make it farther off than that ;)
oh, N/M i ssee that you used your gps......... well then what software version do you have on it? when i had the original version from when it first came out i was getting 11.1 average! that sucked
after i had it update it was like a completely different program.
also its A LOT about driving habits
if you drive higher speed milage goes down
if you have big swamper compared to my smooth highway tires you could also knock off a mile or 2
but you should definatly be getting better than 12-15 thats crap
go to the 3500 fourm we had made a thread intheir not too long ago
mid twentys is very common.
Burnin Mad Max 09-01-2005, 02:13 PM Yep, I have a Predator as well and before adjusting my speedometer I saw great milage on my DIC too. Now that its adjusted and accurate to .5 MPH on my GPS the real world numbers are what I've listed. I have All terrains for tires. I'm not gonna call you a liar but a lot of people I know get a kick out of arguing how much better fuel economy they can get and all of them imbelish on their numbers. It's a competition to them. I also don't know anybody personally with the milage your claiming and I know a lot of Duramax owners with tire sizes of nearlly every range. If you are getting that milage great for you and way to beat the filling stations up. I've been a losing battle since bolting on bigger meats but I don't complain about it like so many do because I've never lifted a truck and put bigger tires on to save on fuel. I just like BIG trucks. I've also invested too much money on a truck to be whinning about MPG's. I hope everybody enjoys their trucks like I do. :)
benz_020 09-02-2005, 02:14 AM Yep, I have a Predator as well and before adjusting my speedometer I saw great milage on my DIC too.
i see it after adjusting. just like the pics above
before adusting it would show Lower than actual, when you put larger wheels on.

how much did the

cost ya?
OK, time for truth. I've got the Pred 120 loaded (again; safe and sane is just not in me). Stock wheels, etc. Haven't seen 18-20mpg since I first got the truck and loaded up the toolbox. Have seen quite a few tranny limps on 120hp, too. Usually get about 16mpg at best on street driving firmly, and about 17 at best romping on freeways. I believe diesel engines are expected to lose about 10-15% mileage with every 10 mph over 55-60 mph that you go. I play, I pay. The mileage claims of many are a constant source of amusement in my group of all-brands diesel owners. Only guy who really does much better is the 03 PSD owner who drives more mellowly than my grandmother ever did.
CStone 09-02-2005, 02:34 PM wow. how many of you guys read the original question? :)
RedRiceEater 09-02-2005, 02:52 PM I read it. ;)
The 85 tune is as low as I have ever set mine. It drives great, good power, fairly good mileage.
The 120... I can't say anything about the mileage because I stayed in the throttle all of the time and my mileage went down. It is still smooth and powerful.
Is he insinuating that we detoured off on a tangent ? A brain trust like this group ? Nah...
RedRiceEater 09-03-2005, 01:41 AM  no chance... not us

I reduced my tire size to see great milage. I had 38" tires on it previously. It also set off my SES light and coded for my anti-lock brakes to be serviced everytime I ran it up passed 70MPH untill it was adjusted to correct the difference. Fact is the DIC is easily manipulated. Coast down a hill and you get 30MPG climb up the other side and your getting 5MPG
The Flux capacitor is loan to me from the American institute for time travel technology. :secret: My Flash Gordon telepathy helmet technology was sourced from Area 51 when I reverse-engineered captured alien space craft. :lying: Both will be available in 2010 on select GM vehicles as a part of ONSTAR. ):h
