Anyone running an aftermarket cowl induction on their 6.5? If so, what differences have you noticed - power, temps, mileage . . . .

I've done it to my 95, and it made a big difference on how hot the under hood components were. Before on a hot day, I could NOT bear to touch anything, thats including plastic pieces, even the batteries. Last summer, just after installing the hood I noticed that the underhood temperature was lower, I was actually able to touch the components. It's a good investment IMO.

Power was un-affected, it's for moving more air through the engine compartment

Mileage, can't say

I just happened to be looking at the products that JC Witney offers when the thought of cowl induction came to mind.

I'm gonna have to take a closer look to see what sort of additional 'plumbing' would be required to actually get the air intake up to the cowl.

Whatever you do, buy a good quality steel hood. My first one was fiberglass and did flex and crack alot and yes it was a very high end one, not one of the cheap knock-offs. We even added more resin when we redid it the first time and it still developed cracks. I think they would be fine for racing, but everyday use is too much for them. I have a steel Goodmark now and am very happy with it. I am not aware of any kit to use the cowl area to draw air in for the motor though. I have looked at it a number of times to try and figure out some beneficial way of doing it but IMO it would be a complete PITA. The addition of the hood did make a huge difference in cooling though.:ro)

I have just found a dealer in Wetaskewin Called Super Bee I have not dealt with them, but they are the Canadian Distributor for AIM Industries. They are currently on sale right now for about $500 but I do not know if they are metal or fiberglass. They do have a web site but it is the worst one that I have seen in a long time. Let me know if you contact them and they are a good deal.

I finally got one on my truck, currently away for paint. I believe everything runs cooler with it installed. I plan on checking the temps after I get it back.
Hey TL I found another hood locally for less than shipping yours, so I bought it instead of shipping yours to me.

I've got one on my suburban. It was on it when I bought the truck, so I don't know how much of an improvment it is. It does get good air flow under the hood. Rather than bothering getting the inducion up there, I want to mount an IC with electric fan......eventually;)

Firefighter

I only noticed a little difference outside the truck, but unless you heard one with a cowl hood and one witha stock hood side by side, I don't think you would really notice.

Yup, sure do! I actually might be passing by there around that time. I live about 7.5 hrs north/west of there and have relatives in Kamloops that we visit often. I'll PM you if it might work out and maybe we can get together for a cold one or two!:beerchug:

It looks like his old grille, just powerwashed all the chrome stuff off, you can tell from the pictures that it's the same one. Notice the missing piece of grille in the upper left hand corner of the picture, or passenger's side.

Good eye chevydiesel, washed up, steel wool the heck out of it and then a couple coats of flat black BBQ paint. It may blow off at the next wash but now i know what i'll be buying aftermarket for another grill since that ones missing a chunk. You can get billet inserts for them too!

Looks near impossible to me, not enough room there and then there's the plumbing it so you can raise and lower the hood too. I'll post a pic tomorrow as mine is installed now...:muahaha:

bowtie
06-16-2005, 01:35 AM
Nothing is impossible BUT some things are very hard to make work and look good to. A larger scoop area might allow an IC to be installed, but then as CR correctly stated you got to plumb it with something that will hold up to the heat and pressure.
I'd like to see it work but think it looks near impossible to me too.

Firefighter
06-16-2005, 10:47 AM
And remember, hot air rises so IMO you would be loosing some of the efficiency, especially in city driving. I think you would gain some on hwy but by seeing the difference in engine temps on my 2 trucks with Cowl hoods, I can't help but think that it would almost be wasted effort. Now please don't jump all over me for saying that, but having the IC completely out of the hot engine bay environment will still yield much better results. Just my .02;)

CanadianRigger
06-16-2005, 11:47 AM
Heres some shots of the Cowl Induction hood installed. You can't even fit a pack of cigs under the framework and that pack is just a little over 3 1/4" from top to bottom. If you removed the framework the hood would be too weak to stand up to anything, i'd put money on it that it would warp from heat over time but you guys can decide on that.

You oughta think about pulling off the beauty rings and center caps and painting your wheels the same flat black as your grille. I did it on my burb a month or so ago, and it looks SHARP after you put the beauty rings and center caps back on. People think I just bought new wheels and tires.

CanadianRigger

Rattle can painting business (well thats what the email said anyways), now thats funny. Hood was done proff at a shop, grill was rattle can and its already coming off and i haven't washed it yet. Doing the wheels might have been a thought for awhile but i was considering the Grabber Green can for those.....lol.

w_huisman
06-16-2005, 01:42 PM
What kind a rattle can did you use on the grille? If I ever spray anything, it's with Rust-o-leum. It's always worked well for me on all sorts of materials, and the flat black I put on the wheels is still looking brand new after 1/2dzn car washes and a few thousand miles.

BTW: Your hood is SWEET. I think GM should make them OEM equipment. ;)

a paint job's only as good as the surface prep and paint you put on it.

Who said spray painting wasn't an art form?

Firefighter
06-16-2005, 02:13 PM
I like the wheels done body colour personally. I did my 94 like that and they were fine for 2 winters and then needed to be redone but mostly due to rock chips. That hood looks good CR!:ro)

CanadianRigger
06-16-2005, 02:16 PM
It was a run of the mill BBQ paint, i knew it wouldn't last long on the grill with the chrome underneath but it gave me a good idea of what it would look like when i buy another grill.

CR, the hood looks good. Is it the wide or the narrow version and do you think that it can be made functional some how to put air into the turbo? Just the hook-up at the hood. I have an idea for the hook up to the turbo inside. Thanks

CanadianRigger
06-16-2005, 03:20 PM
I think it would be tough to make it functional so suck in air, here's a shot from inside the truck i just took if that helps you.

CR, have you noticed any more noise from the engine with the hood? Are you going to try and replace some of the sound insulation on the new hood?

CanadianRigger
06-16-2005, 08:10 PM
Haven't noticed a thing but my engine is already EXTREMELY LOUD with diesel clatter, don't think i'll replace any insulation. Cold starts are near deafening with clatter if the hood is up. Can't say i've heard a louder Cummins or P'Stroke.:D

Firefighter
06-17-2005, 10:58 AM
I don't have the insulation on mine either. I don't know about CR but I don't notice any more noise while I'm driving. The insulation is only going to hold in more heat too which is going to defeat part of the purpose.

Big dent or little one FF.....nice sig there...lol

Firefighter
06-17-2005, 02:11 PM
More bad than big. Right on the top outside corner of the boxside about halfway between front and back. Initial dent only about 3"in diameter but being it was on the edge from top down mad it also bow out about 2" and spread about 6"wide and 8" down. And, of couse it's on the drivers side so every time you go out to the truck, what is the very first thing you see? :banghead: Yup, made a few new phrases when that happened.
