I am also looking to add another fuel tank to my truck. I don't want to use valuable space in my short bed, so I explored the same question you have. I came to the conclusion that the best place for a second tank on a crew cab is under the cab on the driver's side. The tank could be as big as 16 W X 30 L X 10 H. This should be approximately 24 gallons. I haven't finished my research on how to do everything legally yet, but I will post my solution as soon as I am finished.

Transfer Flow makes a good setup with a good install kit and paperwork. What is particularly nice is how the electronics dovetails with the OEM and the automatic move of fuel from the aux to the OEM. A little pricey though.

you should take a look at www.supertanks.com (http://www.supertanks.com/)
they have an oem replacement tank which holds 60 gallonsfor a short be and 75 for a long bed..
it actually fits where the tank is already. i don't have one yet - but I do know I don't want to lose bed space and also don't need to invent my own if the net gain would be the same as using the super tank.
when i get around to ordering it and installed i will post some more info and pics - hopefully by the end of this summer...

I have replaced my oem tank with a 53gal Super Tank. An alternative would be to redirect your exhaust so you could put a similar tank on the passenger side.
Unfortunately, this would probably require the exhaust exiting the hood
I looked into all kinds of underbed tanks. I got my 1st gen SuperTank for $500 + shippin. Problem puttin a tank where the spare tire is: then you gotta put the spare in the bed on a long or risky trip :(

will these monster tanks work with the nicktane kit?

I am sure they will but you will have to re-run the fuel line a little further. IIRC, the Nicktane is usually mounted on the driver's side outside frame in front of the rear wheel well? If so, you will likely need a couple of longer fuel lines.

One thing you could try is an "L" tank..it is about 1' wide and in the shape of a "L" (of course. and it takes care of the unused space under your tool box (if you have one and it doesnt go all the way to the bed)

I saw a custom built tank last year up in Alberta. It was made of 1/4 inch aluminum diamond plate and filled the bottom of a longbed 1 ton. It was 4 inch's deep and reinforced from the inside so it could carry a load on top of it. It held 98 gallons. Looked nice to me. Wouldn't work very well with a 5th wheeler but you could put a slide in camper on top of it or use a regular trailer and a cap. Don't know what it would cost to custom fabricate it.
