: New over heating thread
huntsalot 06-07-2005, 02:49 AM I see that the 1st thread I started is way to big now. Well now that the warmer weather is here it time for us too hook the toy hauler up and go to the beach well we did just that this last weekend and guess what, yep your right in the red both temps and the little display says "hot coolant over heating." and its not my edge I have not had it in for the last couple of months, plus is was only 90 out when we took our trip. I have talked to the dealer about this 3 to 4 times and they tell me that GM is aware of the problem but there is no fix. I like this one, I heard the gauges read hotter then what it is yeah. what ever. I have a question, " has anyone had a lemon law on this issue when they wont take it in for this problem?"
JJs DuMax 06-07-2005, 05:27 AM IIRC Cadent45 did a buyback on his 04.5 LLY. You might PM him for specifics. Sorry to hear the problem still persist with your truck. JJ :)
fredw 06-07-2005, 05:29 AM look for a lb7 and your problem should be solved, or have gm switch engines to that one
JJs DuMax 06-07-2005, 06:03 AM FredW,
Too early in the morning for that stuff! ):h JJ :)
RickDLance 06-07-2005, 09:28 AM huntsalot , the best I could do was a promise to get mine fixed, and a customer loyalty check. Mine went all the way to shut down a couple of times. It has gotten better with the reflash, but still runs too hot.
fredw , good idea, I liked the LB7's power and fuel mileage better, but the computer and wire harness would have to be changed. The main reason we switched to the LLY's in the first place was to get the injector's on the outside of the engine where they belonged. I'm not sure I would go back to the crankcase full of fuel problems they were having.
My 2nd and 3rd LLY have never overheated to the point of setting off the alarms. I am searching for wood to knock on!!
rt446 06-18-2005, 04:56 PM Is this a problem with all the later models? or is it ramdom. Please let me know I am about to trade a preferly good 2002 that has never given me any problems even in the summer in the mountians with the 5er in my sig. Sure don't want to trade into a problem. thanks
TxChristopher 06-18-2005, 05:33 PM huntsalot, how does your fan function? What temps does it kick in? Does it come in gradually or all at one time?
You were overheating with lighter loads and it has been brought out that the fan can be the culprit causing that.
.
Pwdr Extreme 06-18-2005, 09:21 PM I have an '04.5 LLY That tows a lot. A few weeks ago I was pulling about 12k or so up some 7% grades, ambient was only around 60 but the motor never offered to get hot. The fan would go on and off a couple times up the really long hills, but that was it. Tranny never went over 200, stayed right around 180ish. That was with a Predator custom 45hp tune loaded, about 5k to 6k elevation. I just towed a 7,000 trailer (not that heavy, I know) to California and back in some really hot weather, again the fan would come on now and then but never got hot. That's with the A/C on etc. Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones??
David 06-18-2005, 11:43 PM I just got back from vegas and in bullhead,AZ i pulled 6%hills and did'nt over heat.
But i came to sum more hills on the way home i think and it hit 230 deg.once.
My fan comes on a lot!!!!!!!!
David:)
davedan 06-19-2005, 12:23 AM I heard buy a few that changing the water pump, fan clutch, and radiator from an LB7 cures the heat of the lly. My LLY has only hit around 220 a few times but came down once the clutch locked.
watersampler 06-19-2005, 01:58 AM i just bought a new 05 duramax last thursday is this heat problem happning to evey one or this just a few people? i am a die hard gm person but should i have gotten a ford diesel or they having a lot of problems also?
Prostar8.20 06-19-2005, 08:52 AM I think the Fords have a list that goes from here to Tim Buck Two..............Don't be silly, your truck is the best so far.............................
JJs DuMax 06-19-2005, 09:21 AM davedan, hadn't heard that one? LB7 and LLY's share the same stack, LLY is supposed to have a higher flow water pump, though IIRC when we checked that out they use the same part #. That fix sounds very suspect! ;)
watersampler, several Ferd's have reported overheating under similar conditions as the LLY. Still think the GM platform offers the best powertrain package with the Ally. :ro)
Pwdr Extreme, another positive endorsement that not all LLY's are overheating. Appears to be just the right, or wrong depending upon how you look at it, combination of load, altitude, outside ambient temps, humidity, grade % and duration of time at high boost that breaks the threshhold needed for overheating.
David, the fan cycling on/off is a good sign. Do you recall what the outside temps and humidty were during your run? Also load weight and speed?
If you haven't read the original overheating thread you might want to. I know, the freakin thing is long! It does provide insight into what has been tried/tested to date.
Guys, I agree with TxC and XRFreak that we should keep the original overheating thread as the primary funnel of information on this. Much easier for GM to take this one versus several spin-offs to work from. JJ's .02 cents worth. JJ :)
