I read in my manual to turn on high idle you turn the key to on and put the fuel pedal to the floor and push on the brakes three times with in eight seconds and it turns the high idle on and you repeat to turn it off. I did it and the did read high idle on. started the truck and it idles higher nice thing to have in this cold weather do all these trucks have this on them?

All 04.5 and newer have that.

For clarity it's called elevated idle in the manual (-high idle is an optional feature and is enabled with cruise control) and kicks in about @32f raising rpms to 1000. Reminds me of how the old auto chokes worked. Used it yesterday with the auto start and truck warmed up quicker for sure.

Mine started and went to 1100 rpms when I got in and touched the fuel peddle it went down. Then I drove around and stopped and it was very very cold out like 11 degrees it went right to 1100 rpms again so it seems to do it when ever the temp hits a certain low. It sounds like the same thing your talking about.

high idle will kick in anytime outside temperature is below 32F, and the engine coolant temp is below 150F. you have to be in park or neutral with ur foot off the brake and off the gas pedal. also if your IAT reaches 32F it will also shut off the high idle

How do you activate the "high idle" option vs turning on the "elevated idle" through the DIC, If it is in the manual I appoligize, I only read the stuff I found important on maintence, routine and preventitive. Thanks

What you're describing is elevated idle. As long as engine temp and outside air temp are both below a certain level, you'll have the higher idle RPM (with the vehicle in park and no peddle's pushed).

High idle is turned on with the cruise control buttons. You can raise and lower the engine RPMs with the accel/decel buttons. I don't remember the exact procedure since my truck doesn't have it I didn't bother to memorize it, but it is in the manual.

x2, just turned on my father in laws elevated idle feature yesterday. Chris

Just to set the record straight again the "Elevated idle" is on all the newer trucks, if the outside air temp is below 32 deg or so and the engine is cold and you have turned the feature "On" either with the pedal procedure or thru the DIC it will bump the idle up to 1,000 rpm or so until the engine warms up and then it will idle down to normal.

Word of caution, if you have a factory remote start and the truck is idleing up at 1,000 rpm when the remote start 10 minute time is up, the truck will shut it self off at the 1,000 rpm's, not a good feeling when the truck shut's off and you can still here the turbo spinning down with no oil pressure.

The "High Idle" option is a $200 extra cost option that would be ordered when your truck was built and be on your window sticker when you bought the truck. It is activated by the cruise control buttons when your truck is parked and maybe neutral too , and can bump the idle up to 1,500 rpm's or so at any time and any temp.
Mostly used for jump starting a vehicle, running an inverter, or an engine mounted air compressor, maybe a winch when 4 wheeling or what ever you might need it for.

As far as I know it is only a software update by the factory to get it to work but GM refuses to allow it to be added on later by their dealer's and Tech2 even if your willing to pay for it after the fact, don't understand their reasoning but that's the way it is.

Is the elevated idle really needed when truck is warm enough though?

huh? lol sorry. hgh idle will only kick in when the correct parameters are met within the ECM.

When you turn on elevated idle, either with the pedals or through the DIC, what you're really doing is "enabling" elevated idle. As long as it's not cold out it won't raise the idle RPMs. Likewise when the truck is up to temp, it won't raise the RPMs either.

The elevated idle on the other hand sure is a nice feature.

It actually got cold enough for the elevated idle to kick in this week. I totally forgot that I even turned it on a while back ago...I think last winter. Anyways, I about freaked out that after I remote started it, the idle shot up to just over 1k. ...(silly reindeers playing tricks on me) but then I remembered....ahhhh.
Happy Holidays!

A PTO is one of the reasons for the high idle, another is if you have electrical loads you want to power. Many/most don't need it, which is why it's an option...
