Hello,

Installing the e-locker tonight and we can not get the short axle shaft to pop out. We have tried beating on it pretty good, and still no luck. It feels like there is something strong holding it in. Front diff is out and on the bench. Long shaft no problem. :help: :help: :help: :help: :help:

Just use something to drive it out. It will come but takes a good little tapping to get it out. Matt

There really isnt a good way to get a stuborn shaft out. Usually a few cuss words are involved. I've been most successful with those types with a sawzall and a few good blades and a new shaft.

I thought of that, but the part we can cut would still leave the shaft inside. With the end off will the carrier come out with the shaft still inside? Believe me, even Patrick the saint he is almost slipped up with a naughty word.

If I have to call around, what trucks have the same differential? Are all 01 to 03’s the same? Are the gas HD trucks the same?

....

Not true. We did transmission fluid and filter, and fuel filters. We did not get around to the diff services. The magnet did look kind of like a caterpillar and not the diesel one either.

Mark, once you get the flange off, you can get the carrier out after splitting the case. Once you get it out, you can play with it alot easier.

You cant get to the inside of the shaft even after splitting the case as the ring gear blocks any and all access to that pesky snap ring.

The HD series trucks all use the same stub shaft if not mistaken.

Well here is the update. The sawzall did not even scratch the shaft, and I tried two different types of blades. What did do the trick was a large chop saw with a cutoff type wheel that we use for exhaust pipe. Got the carrier out and pulled the center pin out that holds the spider gears in place. This let the shaft come down and I could get at the clip. I have a whole new axle assembly coming from a salvage yard and a new shaft coming from the stealer. One of then I hope will come thru for me! The parts are in the case and I should be good to go. I hope!

Get the torch and burn out the pin! You won't need it anyhow.

Mine did the same thing. Once the guts are out you can use a maul and a big punch to remove it. Spline imprints in the "jesus" clip...

I just took a long screwdriver and put it down the hole on the side of the pin and smacked it with a hammer. the shaft then came right out.
