: Bed Liner Question
baseballz71 06-06-2005, 06:05 PM I am going to have a bed liner sprayed in on wednesday and I am contemplating having them spray it over the bed rails or not. I have a black truck so the liner will not be contrasting the truck. But I just wanted to hear what everyone thought about spraying over the bed rails or not.
P.S I don't want grandpa bed bars and I heard bed rail caps will scratch the paint.
supatrucka 06-06-2005, 06:13 PM Do a search on line x or rhino liner you should come up with what your looking for. I think ova the rail looks good if they mask it with tape then pull it off nice clean line. dave
akdiesel 06-06-2005, 06:13 PM I have the over the rail done on mine simply because I put things in the bed from the side of the truck. I did not want to scratch the bed rails by doing this. It is your choice if you get it done as to how far over the rail you want them to do it.
I would go for it, personaly.
Johnswiftm 06-06-2005, 06:23 PM I would suggust under the rail that way if you ever add a top or anything like that you have a good surface for the seals. If you are worried about scrathing the top of the rails put some bed caps on them. The Plastic caps tape down and do not scratch the paint.
bugsy2004 06-06-2005, 06:41 PM I had mine Line-x over the top rails and love it. The plastic rail caps will definitely scratch the rails. :ro)
PghFamilyMan 06-06-2005, 10:58 PM I got the Line-x over the rails and also a fold-a-cover installed and have no problems with it. My truck is also black and you can hardly notice it. I say go over the rails and you won't be disappointed!!
smshiver 06-07-2005, 12:53 AM I went for under the rails. If they ever get scratched up, I'll have the rails done. Always can do them later, but can't undo it after it's done.
Think of it this way: No matter what you choose, the paint will get scratched. ;)
If you line-X over the rail, they have to scuff the paint for the stuff to adhere against. -:t
If you install caps (either plastic or alum or SS) they will rub and scratch your paint. -:t
If you do nothing, and lean over the bedrail to drop something in or pick something up, you will scratch the paint with a button or zipper. -:t -:t
Pick your poison - you can't choose wrong!! :D
(BTW, I chose over the rail on my previous 2500HD so I could stand on the rail if I needed to w/o fear of making paint look bad, and so I wouldn't slip off). If you choose to go this route, show the company doing the work where you want the "line" to end up so its not too far up on the bed and not too far down. My first truck, they sprayed the liner almost 2" below the top of the bed and it looked downright ugly. Good Luck :grd:
Rockin 06-07-2005, 10:11 AM mine are over the rail. I've stacked plenty of hay on em, stood on them, dragged stuff over them and don't have to care. caps scratch and the move around. Stand on them and they almost feel like they will fall off.
pt536 06-07-2005, 10:43 AM I also did over the rail. Looks good and provides solid footing when standing on rail stacking hay!
MiDmax 06-07-2005, 11:09 AM LINE-X......;)
Over the rail on all my trucks......... Never have regreted it!!:D
JRKRACE 06-07-2005, 11:14 AM I did under the rail and used GM soft rail caps. Best of both worlds. The caps do not scratch because they are rubbery and they are easy to remove if needed.
Deadeye 06-07-2005, 01:23 PM I got line-x over the rail and a tonneau fiberglass on it . the line-x stick out a bit but I don't mind since my truck is white with a number of black mods. Something to consider:
Line-x looks good and dosn't fade too bad. But it is not as tough as rhino which does fade. IBDMX'IN used to work in this areana and can give you some serious info.
JAKE BRAKE 06-07-2005, 07:27 PM Went under the rails on mine when I had it Rhinoed. I guess it matters if you use your truck for work or pleasure. Another way to look at is, put the gate down to launch stuff in the back, then there is a 99% chance of not scratching the rails.
JhnZ71 06-07-2005, 08:12 PM Yeah i have over the rail done, havent regretted it for a second. I even removed the bed cap and had that line-xed
my bed looks great, also there real great about customer service, My grizzlys winch fairlead scraped a little of off my tailgate. They fixed it for free.
TruckDaddy 06-09-2005, 09:51 AM I'm a LINE-X dealer. A lot of customers struggle with this. I tell them: If you use your truck like a truck, get it sprayed over the rails. If you don't use your truck like a truck, then don't get it sprayed over the rails. Worst case: You can get the rails sprayed later, it's harder to do and will cost a little more, but at least it can be done.
haneym 06-09-2005, 03:25 PM definitely over the rail. i can grab stuff and load it in and out of the bed from the side and not have to worry about scratching the truck. not to mention, it gives good traction when standing and climbing around back there.
