Just use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF and you will be fine.

The Dextron VI is not compatable with the seals in the older Allisons.

The fluids formerly called DEX3 are usually called Dex/Merc, D3M. Dex6 has additives that harden common types of Viton seals.

Personally, I would not use DEX6 in ANY transmission that wasn't designed for it. Viton is a common seal material in most all automatic transmissions.

I'm sure the pro's will chime in, but seeing that it's winter...I read a while back that DEX VI shouldn't be used in harsh winter climates. A lot of norther states and especially the Canadians were frying transmissions b/c DEX VI has a much warmer freeze point. Just something to take into account depending on your climate.

Can any experts confirm this. It's been some time since I read that thread.

Yes, among other things... like Viton seal hardening with Dex6.

TES-295 approved fluid is BEST to use in the Allison. Period.

Okay, newbie question, what's TES-295 approved fluid? I need to replace mine (as I near 50,000 and need to change a leaking cooler line, SURPRISE!). Also, is it best to have a tranny shop do this to get more replacement of fluid, or is draining and replacing good enough in the Allison?

See www.allisontransmission.com for a list of Allison Approved TES-295 fluids.
TranSynd® is a TES-295 approved fluid, so is Mobil DELVAC ATF.

You can drain and refill, but you'll need to do it twice for the full benefit.

Thanks from a newbie! Can anyone tell me where the Serial Number is located on my Tranny?

Its stamped on a tag on the side near the rear of the trans or on a sticker on the side.
The DEXRON6 S/N break for Indpls built is listed 6310670488, for Baltimore builds its 6320784373.

To keep it simple and avoid crawling under your truck, if your truck is 2007 or newer you can use DEX6. 2006 and older should use DEX3. All can use TES-295 fluids.

So from what I've just read, TES-295 fluids are now "better" than DEX3 branded, correct?

Yes, they always have been....
