what is the easiest way to disconnect the dinger on the drivers door when you open it. It is driving me crazy.

Brent,
I don't know what truck you have but on my 03 2500HD, I had the same idea about the chime. After some investigation, I learned that the chime originates from a sound module built in the radio and is therefore inaccessible. I suppose a good radio man could remove it but I suspect that it would disable your other warning chimes that sound to warn you of various problems that appear on your DIC. If you will listen closely, you will see that the chiming sound comes out of your door speakers. It is something you are going to have to learn to live with.

I'll share a tip with you that I discovered accidentally about the chimes. It is not in any manual. I like to listen to the radio sometimes with both doors open but the chimes cause problems here. I discovered purely by accident that you can cancel the chimes by pressing and holding the DISP button inside the TUNING knob on your radio. Press DISP and hold it till chimes stop. Sometimes it will work on the first try and sometimes it takes several attempts but eventually it will quit chiming. Usually takes no more than five or six trys. Of course, this wonderful feature is cancelled once you turn the ignition off and you have to do it all over again the next time you want to leave the door(s) open. Hope this helps.

you can control the volume of it with one of the radio buttons too (that is in the manual. it is the 4500 manual anyway) but for doing away with it not sure that is possible

Yea...you can make it LOADER.
Disp...will have to try that.
If the door is open push in the latch, truck thinks the door is closed and turns the dinger off, just remember to pull on the handle before you close the door or it will bounce back at you...yea I forgot...

I had a sub & amp put in and I am still using my factory head unit. When I brought the truck home the door dinger still worked, but then I had a problem with my remote wire to the amp, brought it back to the stereo shop to fix the wire and the dinger hasn't worked since. I have no idea what they did to it, but I now have no door dinger and still have my factory radio.

You say you have no chimes now BUT did that disable your warning chimes from the DIC and elsewhere? Example: Turn signal left on too long and unknown to driver.

I think it did disable all my chimes, because when my chime used to work if I would hit the lock button twice with the door open then it would ding.

Your method seems to work! I don't think it's designed to work that way or it wouldn't take multiple attempts but sitting in a parking lot today I tried it and it works on mine.

Do a search for kill the door chime mod w/pictures March 2004. This is for 2003 and later models, disconect green wire push terminal out with jewlery scewdriver or something simlar and insulate. Very good mod I belive it disconnects the sensor that says the key is in. Stops the chime when you open the door with the key in. As far as I can tell all other chime functions still work (seat belts, lights manually left turned on etc). Of course you could manually lock your keys in but it's not a problem when you use your remote to lock it. The volume of the chime can be adjusted by button 6 on the radio but only for loud and LOUDER! Also the chime volume can be adjusted with a tech 2 - I need to do this to mine. Hope this helps.

Shortcut,
Glad the DISP button worked on the chimes. Actually, the DISP button is there to display the time, or clock, for a few seconds when EVERYTHING is off and the key is out of the ignition. I just learned the chime bit by pure luck one day fiddling with all this modern technology.

KiwiEd,
Sounds like you have the best idea yet on disabling the chime only and not the warning chimes on the DIC. Only problem is, I don't completely understand what you are saying. Also don't understand what you mean "can be adjusted by a tech 2".
Gonna do a search for killing the door chime and see what I find. Thanks for the info.

colcolombo Once you find the thread you should be able to understand the wiring its one of the plugs on the BCM. I belive the dealer can alter chime volume with tech 2.

i saw one guy on here that said he rewired his door speakers (driver door swaped with rear door on crew cab) so the dinger now comes out of the rear door. cant remember who wrote it or what link it was on but sounded pretty cool.

Well fellas, I have digested all the different ways to stop the chimes, from altering the wiring to punching a hole in it with an icepick (!) and I have concluded that WanaDmxsub gets the Oscar for the best and EASIEST idea.

I cut an old round barreled screwdriver off about an inch from the handle and filed the burrs off. You can insert it in the latch on the door and pull toward the outside of the door. It should click TWICE as it is a two step latch. As Wana said, be SURE and pull the door handle to reset the lock or it will not latch when you try to close it. Pitch the screwdriver stub into the little bin on the bottom of the door and it is ready for the next time. Of course, this method only serves to leave the door(s) open without chiming. Once the door is closed, the chimes default to the factory settings.

Thanks for all your responses. It beats pushing the DISP button repeatedly.
BTW I learned that in addition to temporarily displaying the clock with everything off, the DISP button displays the countdown time in minutes and seconds when a CD is playing. No doubt it has other wonderful functions just waiting to be discovered by inquiring minds, er, fingers! The DISP button WILL stop the chiming if you want to hold it in a number of times and not go the stubby screwdriver/latch route. At least it works on my 03 2500HD. And to borrow a line from Forrest Gump, "That's all I've got to say about thaaaaaatttt!"

To follow up on the DISP button technique......I tried mine today and found that you need to hold the DISP button (while the door ajar chimes are going) until you hear a sharp beep. Release the button and repeat two more times and then when you release the DISP button after you hear the third beep, the door chimes are off. You can reactivate the chimes by holding in the DISP button again if you want to.

I had been using the door latch method for quite a while, but I always forget to unlatch it before shutting the door.

Thank you guys for the info. Tried the Disp thing today and it worked. Never knew how helpful this forum was going to be.

The DISP button worked! Another thing that works is if you push the key in and turn it and then turn it back and pull it out part way until the chime fades, and repeat until the chime stops. I dont know why you would want to do this instead of using the DISP, but I just thought I would share my 2 cents. I do believe, however, that after the beep has sounded so many times that it somehow disables the chime for that particular sequence. LOL no engineer here, just a thought.
