Got a '02 6.6 110k miles with 6k hours of operation, lots of idleing. my oil press gauage is now fluctuating at idle, but at 1500 rpm it's steady. is this a sign the pump is going out or just dirty, any ideas?

I would hook up a mechanical gauge and check it. Could just be a sending unit going bad. There is a plug below the oil filter that you can tap into to check it.

Does your pressure ever fluctuate very low?

Lower pressure at idle (typ. 30-40PSI) than when rolling (typ. 60PSI) is normal for the Duramax engine, both from what I've read as well as my own experience. Some ppl who run 5W40 oil report lower idle pressures than 30-40PSI, but I cannot speak to that since our climate doesn't warrant the thinner oil.

John I was wondering if your pressure ever fluctuated below 15 lbs or lower. If it doesn't, I wouldn't worry about being you pump. Sounds like your oil pressure sending unit acting up. Might want to try a OEM unit if you pan on replacing it. I have had a few problems with aftermarket sending units

When running down the highway at 65 I get a twitch/bounce of close to 5 psi all the time. Hsa done it since new. I'd verify with a mechanical gauge if you are worried
