: Need to replace front wheel stud
jeeperaz 12-03-2009, 03:39 PM I had a front wheel stud shear off today when I was removing the lugs to rotate the tires.
In order to replace the stud, can I get by with just removing the caliper and rotor... or do I have to remove the hub as well.
If I have to go all the way to the hub, do I have to replace any parts or are they all reusable... such as the wheel speed sensor and any axle shaft seals that may be in there?
Thanks
LtEng5 12-03-2009, 03:58 PM the studs are pressed in, so if you can something around the hub to press out the old stud and then press the new one in from the back, you could leave the hub on.
I have heard of guys hammering out the old stud and using spacers on a lug nut to draw the new stud in....
havent had to do one yet, so I would think the hub might have to come off, and all the parts should be reusable as long as they are not damaged in the removal process
Semi-crazy 12-03-2009, 04:51 PM Yup, just the caliper and rotor.
Preferrably press out, hammer if nothing else, and then use the washers and lugnut as mentioned to draw it in. The service manual recommend using the flat side of the lugnut against the washers.
Spitz 12-03-2009, 11:04 PM Just take the rotor off and a decent sized hammer and give the shit stud a few whacks, it will come right out. A few washers works but it may damage the new lug nut a little bit, i know they sell a "special" tool for it, its just a thick washer that has a taper to it so you dont ruin the lug nut taper..
jeeperaz 12-03-2009, 11:20 PM Thanks guys.
ob_1jr 12-04-2009, 08:11 AM all that trouble...shoot it might be easier to just change the hub....hopefully it comes out easy though...shoot you have 7 more to hold the tire on :p:
It's only a nut and 4 more bolts to change the hub. I am pretty sure you can do it without removing the hub though...i forgot how the dustcover sits/covers.
Spitz 12-04-2009, 08:19 AM Yea and about 200$ more..
jeeperaz 12-04-2009, 12:42 PM Thanks guys. I've replaced many a wheel stud before on my rockcrawlers.
I don't drive this truck that much... it has less than 30k on it so I'm not going to replace the hub unless it's needed.
Off to to find a 21mm socket for the brake caliper bolts.
jeeperaz 12-04-2009, 06:09 PM If in the future, anyone finds themselves in the same position with the same question.... and the search function leads you here...
I just finished mine. Like Semi-crazy said, you do not have to remove the hub. There was plenty of clearance to extract and replace the broken stud after the caliper and rotor are removed. Fun stuff... those caliper bolts are.
LtEng5 12-05-2009, 02:22 AM Fun stuff... those caliper bolts are.
After a couple of mangled wrenches/fingers from hammering on the wrench to get the bolts out, I now FIND A WAY; ANY WAY HOW to get a impact gun back there to take the mounting bolts out...
ob_1jr 12-05-2009, 06:19 AM yeah those caliper bolts are fun!! 221 ft/lbs with locktite on them. I almost broke a breaker bar...i was using a cheater too.

Turn the wheel....
When you turn the wheel all the way to the RIGHT you can get an impact on the LEFT. When you turn the wheel to the LEFT you reach the RIGHT.
The Top bolt needs a very short extension with the short impacts I have, but the gun fits, no problems. Or you can use a long extension, but my long ones are loose and don't hammer well.
Spitz 12-05-2009, 01:29 PM Or just use a little bit of heat from a torch, saves on the stress level..
