: cranks but doesn't start 1999 6.5
73rx3 06-05-2005, 09:17 PM Hi ,
i have a 1999 3500 hd,has the 6.5 TD, its been sitting for a week, and i need it for work tommorrow, and i went to start it tonight,so i can take the stuff off the back,so i can use it, and it just cranks, seems every now and then it sounds like its gonna start, but doesn't. i have 1/2 tank of fuel. ran fine when parked.
could it have lost its prime? looks like there's a fuel pump on the frame, there's no noise from it, gonna go back out with a test light to check it.
could it be the injector pump? what can i check?? thanks Michael
steiner43511 06-05-2005, 10:52 PM the fuel filter is located on top of the motor in the back by the firewall. unscrew the little black thing on top and then turn your key forward. fuel should come out if your lift pump is working, but if it isnt makin sound like you said then it probably aint workin.
CanadianRigger 06-05-2005, 11:42 PM If you haven't got it started and have lots of battery power left try jumping the LP relay in the fuse panel under the hood to see if the lift pump kicks in, then try to start it while its jumped.
73rx3 06-06-2005, 01:14 PM Hi,
i put a new fuel filter in,and opened the bleeder.and fuel comes out, when i turn the key forward. tried starting it again, and it still doesn't start.
i have the batteries charging now,and will try again later today.
could it be the glow plugs?
is there anyway to see if the injection pump is working?
thanks Michael
quantum mechanic 06-06-2005, 01:25 PM loosen #1 injector and crank.
Turbine Doc 06-06-2005, 04:04 PM Bad PMD could do this also, why not put in an order for a Heath remote one you will be better for it anyway. TDG what test could he do for a fuel shutdown solenoid test, anyway to command that to open manually, while attempting to start. Are you getting lots of white smoke on extended crank, if so that is fuel & IP is putting out probably. Any SES lights iluminated read through FAQs for nore no/hard start tips.
73rx3 06-06-2005, 04:37 PM Hi Guys,
i charged the batteries.
cranks fast,still doesn't start,i don't notice any smoke.
i used a test light on the glow plug connector, and its getting power.
also loosened the # 1 injector line and cranked it,and nothing came out.
is the PMD the black box on the IP?
could that stop the fuel from comming thru?
where do you get the heath remote kit from?
can the injector pump be bleed? thanks again Michael
Kappa9012 06-06-2005, 04:48 PM Had the same issue with a 2000 6.5 3500, and the lift pump needed to be replaced. Every great once in a while it would start, but run horribly. Normally it would just sit there and crank.
quantum mechanic 06-06-2005, 04:54 PM He verified fuel pressure to the filter. Check the IGN I and II fuses and/or fuel soleniod fuse. A back up PMD is the only way to determine if the original is working or not.
73rx3 06-06-2005, 05:01 PM Hi quantum,
are those fuses under yhe hood,or in the fuse box on the side of the dash board?
is the PMD something i can buy at an auto parts store?
i called the dealer, and he has 3 of them, $250.00 !
or should i buy on e of those kits on ebay?
thanks Michael
quantum mechanic 06-06-2005, 05:08 PM $250 is about right for a new pmd from the dealer. On a '95-'00 the ECM fuses are under the hood in the fuse block and they're big fuses.
73rx3 06-06-2005, 06:05 PM Hi,
yes,i checked hose big fuses, they were good.
i'll go to the parts store in the morning, and look for a PMD.

Turbine Doc 06-06-2005, 07:05 PM Not wanting to come off again as Heath cheeleading section, but unless you are in a bad spot and need it now you need to look into the Heath unit, these things history is it will fail again, matter of when 7yr warranty was the final decision point for me, and yes you can buy the PMD from a dealer(don't forget to pull resistor form old PMD or buy new one) & build your own cooler for less and even make a remote harness, but if the PMD fails in spite of your best intentions to keep it cool; you have to replace the PMD on your nickle, there have been some PMDs that fail just from poor mfg from Stanadyne in addition to heat related ones.
73rx3 06-06-2005, 08:00 PM Hi Turbine,
where do you get a heath unit?
if i bought a PMD from the dealer, what do i have to do to make a cooler?
anyone have any pictures?
thanks Michael

This was ages ago. It shows me mounting them underhood but both have been sucessfully moved to infront of the radiator.

73rx3 06-07-2005, 01:42 PM Hi Guys,
thanks for the info.
i called Heath today, and ordered the pmd relocation kit. i'm having it sent next day air,so i can get it quick! i'll let you know how i made out.

73rx3 06-09-2005, 10:45 AM Hi Guys,
i put the heath PMD kit in.
and it still doesn't start :(
i pulled the rubber fuel line into the injector pump, and fuel is going in.
could the injector pump go just like that? still no fuel coming out of the injector line.
are there any other electrical things on the IP,that could cause a no fuel condition??
thanks again Michael
quantum mechanic 06-09-2005, 11:24 AM Two things. First make sure the fuel solenoid fuse is good (20 amp). Then if that's not it, pull the optical sensor connector on top of the IP and see if it will start in limp mode.
73rx3 06-09-2005, 01:17 PM Hi
i checked the fuel solenoid fuse .and its good.also pulled the fuel solenoid out,and checked its operation, and it works, fuel came out of the spot where its mounted.
still wouldn't start.
what does the optical sensor look like?? thanks Michael
quantum mechanic 06-09-2005, 01:26 PM It's the connector on top of the IP, sort of under the upper intake bend.. The fuel solenoid is inside the IP too, I'm guessing you're talking about the ESO that looks like a roll of quarters.
73rx3 06-09-2005, 04:51 PM Hi quantum ,
i unplugged the plug on the optical sensor, still didn't start.
the fuel solenoid does work.
i ordered an injection pump from the dealer today. :( but i need the truck.
thanks Michael
