Hi All
I have found that the PO who sold me the engine lied on several accounts. So, i am now trying to clean up the mess...I am going to be changing out the IP, as i have already done the remote mount FSD and keep getting the 1216 and 0251 codes.Stalling ect... My other more troublesome problem is i am convinced i have a head gasket problem. My symptoms are noticed when the radiator cap blows fluid when the guage is reading only 180 and i found black soot under the radiator cap. I read here to try and find which side is leaking by taking off the crossover tube and run the engine without the belt to see which side bubbles on the heads...nothing..the passenger side flowed some water out but no bubbles, did not want to run it very much with out the water pump. I do not yet have a compression tester & hate to buy it for the one time use...but may have to. Anyone have any ideas to tell which side may be my problem?

I think the crossover you are supposed to pull is the exhaust crossover from drivers side to passenger side. Then run it and see which side the white smoke comes from. IMO if your going to go through the trouble of one head gasket you might as well do both, as the failure of one side could be an indication of how hard the vehicle was used before you. Peace of mind.

Got to agree with MDT here, if one side has problems the other can't be too healthy either or far from going bad, fixing the weak side will bring out the weakness in the other side in short order.

If I'm not mistaken I think a set of new head bolts is required also, as I think these are stretch torque style bolts only good for 1 torque cycle, that need to be replaced and should not be reused, never actually done a set myself I'm not 100%, but I believe rather lengthy dialog here & other forums say new bolts are required.

Agreed, once your that far for a few dollars more you can do them both, just make some line up studs like i did and you'll never wreck a gasket putting the heads back on, its a little awkward workin in the truck sitting on whatevers handy but well worth doing both sides. I managed to do it without removing the power steering pump from its bracket on the 00 or removing the hood.

I checked my 6.5 for a blown headgasket by removing the thermostat and the serp belt. This showed me the gasket was blown on the drivers side by the bubbles coming from that head up the coolant crossover pipe

When my head gaskets were blown, I pulled the water crossover and removed the belt. Then when I started the engine, coolant gushed out everywhere.

If you're going to do one, do them both. It's a long, long ways back in there to replace the other one, especially after you've just put everything back together!

Use new bolts too!

Hey Doc here is a pic of the gear on the IP as per our phone discussion. As you can see there isn't enough room for the gear to jump off the cam gear with the cover in place as you'll be removing the pump with the timing cover still on through the oil filler tube hole. Just thought this might help.
Don't drop the bolts into the case, i filled my socket with heavy grease to hold the bolts for the install so they wouldn't drop. A magnetic socket would be better.
