Noticed my oil pan gasket leaking pretty good last week. Gonna take care of it this week. Anything else I should do while the pan is off ? I got 118k on my truck and its stock.

Engine oil pan.

Well you can sit there for a while and gaze at that great piece of machinery:lol: :joke:

Really though, just change the gasket and make sure there's a good contact and you'll be fine.

There's an upper AND lower oil pan?

yup, lower pan is easy to change, its just tin and seals with silicone.

Upper pan requires removal of front diff if 4x4 and trans.

Damn. Thanks Eric. Saying that you know your way around a Dmax is an understatement.

why an upper and lower? why not just one? Are the engineers bored or is there a good reason for this??

Take care,

Will

Seems that the lower is the only one leaking. Does GM make a gasket or what should I use ?

well, needing 12 qts. of oil, it's a bit like a cow. It uses the oil in the upper pan for a while, and then uses the oil in lower pan for a while.

The lower pan is just a place to store oil. The upper pan is cast aluminum and helps with keeping noise down and adds some rigidity( is that a word) to the block.

There are alot of engines nowadays with two piece oil pans, nothing new there.

If its just the lower your doing, you can pull all the bolts and then push a wide chisel at the seam to break the silicone seal. Clean all very well and some high quality silicone and back togather.
