Well, I am changing my batteries and I decide to check my air filter. I loosen the 3 screws and pull out the filter, I notice a bunch of debris on the screen on the intake tube. There is a dirt trail on the bottom of the housing leading to the screen. It looks like the filter bowed in on the bottom and created a leak. I wonder if it is doing it under hard throttle, causing the filter to colapse downward. I don't know what to do, it worries me to continue to run the filter. Is there any other option out there? The stock filter causes my EGT to go up and restriction on air fitler minder. Any suggestions would be great

This is one of the reasons I quit running mine. They do not fit well. I threw mine in the garbage and built the custom intake. I would say put a new stock filter in for now then go from there.

they seem rather flimsy, the opening on the filter is large, and easy for the top and bottom to bow inward. I pushed it in and it stayed bowed, so I think there is a metal frame inside the rubber, but it is very weak. Well, I guess I will be putting a stock one back in. Stupid engineering. You would think that there would be some good R and D before you release a product. They were in a hurry to be the first to manufacture and sell a high flow filter for the vans, and now suck bad. Waste of money. Is it worth calling them and pitching a fit? Tell me more about your custom setup?

I see they list 3 different air filters for the vans? What do you know about the other filters? I didn't see the one I bought on there. Mine is black, the one they list is orange, looks the same.

So I just found out the factory air filter is special order, 70.00
Ouch.

Diesel Filters Online has them for $ 40.00.
The filter is the same for a 6.0 Hummer. I will never go back to AFE after the issues I have had. Good luck trying to talk to someone at AFE.
Look at my thread Custom Van Air Intake. It will show pictures and such.

so I pulled the mass air sensor and it was covered in an aweful sticky dirty film, I am assuming the oil from the filter mixed with dirt. I wonder if dirt getting into my intake caused some of my trouble codes 2 months ago. Someone suggested that a dirty intake could case one of the codes.

The more I look at that filter, the more I realize how flimsy it is, when you compare it to the oem filter, which has a plastic structure the reinforces the filter on the intake side. The AFE bows in and stays that way. I left AFE a message, I doubt they will call back

Did you notice if the bottom half of the filter had more oil than the top ? I had the same issue. Throw it in the garbage and do not look back.

I will be done with it. Lesson learned. I wish there was another option readily available. Time will tell.

Yes I did notice the oil more on the bottom, after cleaning my Mass sensor the van is geting better mileage. The Napa filter seems to be working well, I can't get the filter minder to move, so I am flowing more then the OEM filter was before I replaced it with the AFE one. So, we shall see how things go for now. I hope there will be another option for aftermarket High-flow filters, other then AFE.
I sure love to drive my van, it never gets old. Just lilke when I jump into my Cummins truck, you just can't beat a diesel!!!!!!

Yes, and I like it. How many miles have you put on it now? I just can't get over how flimsy that AFE filter was. I should have taken more notice of your post about the problems you had. I was just so excited to get the filter and install it.

I was starting to think I was the only one with a problem with the AFE. I should have around 15,000 miles by now or maybe even more. So far everything is still good.

The technical support guy at AFE called me back today. He requested some pictures of the filter, and seemed very interested in the problem I had with my filter. He offered a refund on the filter, he instructed me to take it back to the place I purchased it and to have them call for a RMA number. He is handing it over the engineering division, they are going to look into it. I don't know what to think, I have my doubts as to what they are going to do. I made it clear that the filter is sub-par and needs to be re-engineered.
