: Putting a LMM in Place of MY LB7?

Long story short, my motor blew. I just picked up a complete drop in '08 LMM motor complete with all wiring, sensors, computers etc. I even have the tranny and t-case. 40000 Miles on them. The truck it came out of was never modded and got flattened in the rear by a shovel. And believe me, when I say flat, I mean flat! Happened early this week I just got wind of this last night and picked it up this afternoon.

Anyone ever do a swap like this before? Remember, I have EVERYTHING right down to the last sensor. I was thinking of maybe building this motor and swapping it in there. If not, I'll sell it all to help finance my LB7 build? What do you all think?

Thanks,

Nick

Since the LMM is so new, I doubt that anybody has ever done it. I am not sure how complicated the electrical would be since the electrical is completely different. If you do attempt this, I would make sure to have an extra vehicle to drive around because it would take awhile. Would be pretty sweet though. Please post a thread if you try this build, I am sure alot of people would be interested.

Good Luck,
-Brad

Yeah I'm sure that would be a bitch. I've got a huge box with all the wiring harnesses and fuse box etc. Big job for sure. I'm still unsure what I will do at this point but keeping my ears open to see what people have to say.

Thanks

If you have power windows and doors lock then pretty sure that will have to be changed since the LBZ on down used serial data bus and the LMM in NBS uses a different communication bus. I cannot recall the name of it. That is the way many modules talk to each other like the driver, passenger, bcm, and the many other modules. Yours looking at a major change completely through if your truck has any of that now. But i am sure it can be done just will take awhile. The more of the donor system the better you will be. Pretty much anything in your truck now will be gutted for sure.

My truck is pretty much bare bone lol. No power windows or door locks. T-case on the floor and even vinyl on the floor lol. Thanks for the info on that though. I didn't know that. Hey I just had a brain fart. Doesn't PPE make a stand alone computer to run these things?

There is stand-alone for both Allison and Duramax but as to what the limits are I don;t know. Since you have no power stuff that help there. You will need the tire pressure sensors or you throw code for no sensors on the tire pressure monitor system TPMS. No way to turn it off. May depend on some other accessories on the truck as to what you can and can't do. One may have to use a GM Tech II to reprogram the BCM for some things if GM let one do that. Can't think of much else now other than the TPMS. If it was a Dually I think they don't have the sensors.

More good info. I took the TPMS system complete just in case. BCM I think will have to be reprogrammed. Man, I just might sell this all if it's that nuts lol. That or tear the motor down and use the block for my build. Hate to do that though to such a clean and loe mileage LMM.

I think you could get it done since it sounds like you have nearly every wire out of the donor. Just mounting some of the controls on the dash maybe tricky looking gauge cluster be a little more harder to do. Have a good time if you go for it.

Nick forget it. Just use the short block from it and put your LB7 heads on it.

It wont work with your instrument cluster or anything else...wayy too complicated, not worth it.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. But I'm starting to agree with Ben's thinking. The only thing I think I'm gonna have a problem with is tearing apart a perfectly good LMM. I've already got a long block LB7 sitting in my garage that I was going to use for the build. Any idea what a drip in LMM with 40k is worth?

Yep, it would be a wiring nightmare to swap in all of the wiring and such to make it work like stock. I wonder if the LMM injectors could handle the current from the LB7 FICM like the guy who did the LLY head swap? If they could then you could try a swap like that, but it could be a pretty costly experiment.
