: Black smoke with stock truck
dlisabeth 06-04-2005, 06:02 PM I have an '02 with 56000 on the odometer, I have only owned it for the last 4000 miles. I am getting quite a bit of black smoke during hard acceleration at around 2500 rpms. It seems to happen more after I have been doing city driving and then accelerate onto a highway, or when I punch it and drop down to the passing gear. I have read in this forum that it should be a chore to get smoke from a stock truck, but I get smoke quite often. My father also owns a Duramax and I don't remember his smoking this much. Just making sure that this does not indicate a problem with my motor. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Derek
stx450 06-04-2005, 07:16 PM Ij think you might have injector problems. Is your truck feel like its missing?
dlisabeth 06-04-2005, 07:27 PM No it doesn't feel like it is missing, and the injectors were replaced at 49000 miles.
noreaster 06-04-2005, 08:00 PM maybe you got one of those overacheiver CP3 pumps
hdd-max 06-04-2005, 08:09 PM could it be that you have some sort of power adder and you dont know it
Diesel Dragon 06-04-2005, 08:24 PM Check to make sure your air filter is not plugged up.
Cougar281 06-04-2005, 08:38 PM This morning my truck was pouring black smoke when I got on it hard... 31000 on my LLY. It's never smoked like that before. Could I be looking at injector problems in the not too distant future?
dlisabeth 06-04-2005, 09:51 PM I guess my first step will be to stop at the dealer Monday and see if the injectors are balanced.
Victory Red 06-05-2005, 10:00 AM I know that if I grampa drive for a while or a lot of stop and go and then get on it it'll smoke a little more than normal. If you do this 3 or 4 times in a row (hard accels) does it tone down and/or become a brownish tint?
dutch 06-05-2005, 02:35 PM Mine use to do it too before added the Juice. Now it really does it!!
When I would baby it along and not really goose it or anything it would smoke like a Mack when I did goose it.
Still running strong with 90.000+ miles.
JhnZ71 06-06-2005, 06:04 PM Yeah, my truck its pretty hard to make black smoke (unless Predator or Banks is in). But if its smoking too much that could indicate overfueling which could be your injectors. Doubt it though with that few miles on the injectors, check your Fuel and Air filters diesels will smoke more if there isnt enough air comin in.
2loud 06-06-2005, 06:38 PM Black smoke can be a sign of low boost. Check for leaks at the blue hose connections!
Another problem could be dirty mass airflow sensor, or injector issues........
nick04duramax 06-06-2005, 10:02 PM I have an 04 lby I recently noticed alot of black smoke, after reading this post i went out in the driveway and reved my engine up. It is black smoking sitting still. My only mod is a k&n air filter. Has anyone else had this problem as a result of injectors going out? What gives?
Jonathan G 06-07-2005, 04:47 PM I agree with hdd-max. It may have a tune in the ecm you do not know about.

Just a guess but could some of your K&N oil have contaminated/coated your MAS?
MaxRock 06-08-2005, 12:54 PM derek,
Try the simple approach first. If you have been babying the truck or doing a lot of city driving then get on it and it smokes black, it could just be blowing the soot out of the exhaust. Mine will do this a couple of times and then clear up. Try this and see if it addresses your problem. If not, nothing lost. My $.02

nick04duramax 06-08-2005, 09:04 PM ShumDit, I haven't looked in to cleaning/inspecting my mas, because after posting I decided to schedule an appointment at the dealer. I want the tech. to see the smoke and hopefully check my injector balance rates. I hope you're right and its noting major.
JhnZ71 06-08-2005, 09:10 PM Its okay for some black smoke, if you floor it off of a total stop, or rev it in neutral. The truck will make a little smoke...come on guys its a diesel. If its a thick cloud youve probably got problems unless you have a chip. If you can see through the smoke its fine, black smoke is cool anyway, i love spraying it on everything(with banks or pred)
dlisabeth 06-08-2005, 09:32 PM maxrock,
That is exactly what it does, so I guess it is normal.
Thanks
dmax500hp 06-10-2005, 02:52 PM There is a firmware flash for the lly max's. They had real excessive smoke problems @ Idle. The dealer will flash and resolve the problem.
dlisabeth 07-14-2005, 09:17 PM 8 new injectors on the way for me!!!
