about two weeks ago i pulled the valve covers to check valve lash, put everything back together and cylinder 2 injector was leaking and pushing fuel out of the fitting and was visible on the valve cover. i tightened it up a bit and all seemed well.
i smelled fuel the entire time, i cleaned everything and checked the oil. smelled no fuel, today i checked the oil and it had some fuel in it.
checked balance rates were alright but 6 & 8 were the worst topping just over 4. when i checked them a month or so ago they were all under +-2.
is it possible that they went bad that quickly or could it just be a line that is possibly leaking causing the return rates to show this.
sorry for the long winded post, i just wanted to include all the info i could.
thanks, Nate

Balance rates will not identify fuel in the oil. The injector feed line will not put fuel in the oil, the oring on the bottom of the fitting will force the fuel up and out of the engine. Either a cracked body or a leaking return line more likely

is a cracked body visable?

Not with a look at the outside. Its evident buy the ball on the side of the body pushed out. Fuel leaking out of it is a dead giveaway

Since you have them out, thats good and bad.
Bad cause now you wont know if you had a return line seal leaking or something related to install
Good because now you can inspect them visually from the outside, Look near the return line hole and just above that, parially covered by the nut that holds the solonoid down, you will see a small steel ball, looks like a check ball. If its recessed, chances are your good. If its out and sitting against the nut, its a cracked body.
I can get these tested for you with an honest evaluation of what is and is not bad on them.

hmm.. they all look about the same and none of the little balls are "out"

Could have been a return line seal. Only way to test them now is on a stand or in the truck

i guess since i havent touched the return lines and fittings in about 8 months i dont think that was the problem. i think i will just go ahead and get some new injectors.

did a bunch of dirt fall in the injector when you pulled the lines off the first time?

i left the lines in the cover when i pulled the valve cover off, there was just a little bit in them. i cleaned each one with a q-tip soaked in diesel, kept cleaning until i got every bit out of them.

I don't know how you can remove injectors from these trucks without rendering them unusable because of the crap that falls into the injector inlet.
I just removed mine and some of the inlets were filled to the top with rust from the threads on the barrel nut. My truck is no rust bucket either!
How long have the injectors been in?

i pulled the injectors about 8 months ago when i did studs and the socal billet hold downs, balance rates were good. i think the major thing is getting all the crap out of the inlets.
im not exactly sure what happened this time, not daily but my race tune does have pretty high rail psi. i doubt that caused it but it crossed my mind.
btw these injectors only had about 30k on them.
