: Removing Window Film?
ag4gt 06-03-2005, 01:27 PM The wonderful state of Georgia has just changed the window tinting laws. The film my son has on his truck is to dark to pass the new standard.
How the heck do you get the old film off, especially around the back window heater strips.
PEVOMAN 06-03-2005, 02:37 PM Take it to a tint shop, The individual can do it, BUT it's very time comsuming. Tinting techs do this everyday & get very proficent at it. If there was no issue with defroster strips...then try it yourself. Oh to anwser the question, peel & scrape with a razor. Then use plenty of glass cleaner & elbow grease.
deadfurrow 06-03-2005, 02:52 PM Ohio did that years ago. He shouldn't have to worry about the back window(s), since most trucks come with the factory tint anyway. I had to take the tint off my side windows on an old truck I had, & it's a pain, but do-able with a razor blade.
Max Power 06-03-2005, 02:54 PM When they did that here they allowed any vehicles that were tinted before the law came in to stay that way.
DuckhunterInTN 06-03-2005, 03:48 PM Get it started at the top, and if you can get it started in one strip then peel it back a little then spray on a bunch of either soapy water or windex (w/ammonia), and allow it to soak where the film is still attached to the window. Then peel a little more, then soak again. Keep doing this till you reach the bottom. Then clean up with plenty of glass cleaner and a putty knife that uses razor blades and some paper towels.
If it is coming off in little pieces then just use the razor blade putty knife thing and plenty of window cleaner to soak on the glue residue.
Don't use the razor blades on the defroster window, though. Peel with your fingers (avoid the defroster lines) and use plenty of glass cleaners and paper towels (the cheaper and rougher the better).
But I'm with everyone else, you should be grandfathered in. At minimum you shouldn't have to mess with the back glass because on trucks that is usually exempt.
Diesel_Day_Dreamin 06-03-2005, 04:27 PM Use the "static cling" type window tint... If it ever becomes an issue, they peel off easily. (Just a tip for those who will tint thier windows anyway, law or no law.)
crewcab03 06-03-2005, 04:56 PM be carefull with the window heater strips, you can easily scrape them off with a razor blade, I would recommend to take it to a tint shop and have them do it.
dozerboy 06-03-2005, 09:22 PM I would just wait until he gets a fix it ticket. I've had legal tint on all of my rides in several states been pulled over and never gotten a ticket. And here in CA it’s a joke because the tint law is 80 %(? I have IIRC 20%) on the fronts, but they have to prove how it's unsafe for you to have that dark of tint.
BH in AZ 06-04-2005, 02:44 AM I had a window tinter tell me a while back that it is easier to get off if you park it with the window facing the sun to warm it up.
ag4gt 06-04-2005, 08:03 AM He already got a ticket. $1,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If he gets it off by July 1 they will drop the ticket.

He should "only" have to remove the tint from the drivers side and passenger side front windows. Go to the dealers lot you'll see many tinted back windows unless GM is shipping non-tinted windows to Georgia, which I doubt.
Good luck
Ace_of_Chaos 06-04-2005, 10:25 AM High strength rubbing alcohol works great for removing the glue.
ag4gt 06-04-2005, 12:50 PM Well, my son got the film off --- without any trouble. He just started at a corner and s-l-o-w-e-l-y pulled it off. It didn’t even leave much glue behind. Now to take care of the $1000 ticket.

Yikes! $1000! That whole fine was just for the tint?
NorCal 2500HD 06-04-2005, 04:43 PM it pays to have buddies in the police force to write that kind of stuff off.....
dozerboy 06-04-2005, 07:06 PM Dame that’s a lot of $$$$ for just tint I see why you wanted it off.
ag4gt 06-16-2005, 01:16 PM Well, he went back to the police department (by the way, it is a small town department but a Georgia law) and the officer voided the ticket. Want to get the irony of the whole thing? My son works for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation!

whut windows did he take off, and y the hell was it 1000 most i would think is 100
$1000? That's insane. What happens when your tint is legal in your state and you're driving through one of those towns?
