: How many of you guys have cracked pistions with EFI live?
JOKERGERM 11-22-2009, 02:04 PM I was talking to a very knowledgable guy on here and he got me really worried about running a hot Tune on my LMM. I ran nicks Hot Tune for the LBZ for 2 years and over 60k miles and never had one single problem with motor or trans.
But i have heard alot of people are cracking pistons and blowing motors with these 550rwhp tunes.
I really really dont feel like doing that, and from what i hear i got lucky on my LBZ, even with the stock tranny i never had a problem.
Would a 440RWHP tune be a happy Mediain??
thanks all, Im just waiting to retune my LMM and sell my PPE Tuner to one of you guys lol
JOKERGERM 11-22-2009, 04:51 PM Is cracking pistons from to much heat? or to much boost or both?
If you watch your EGT and they stay below 1300 shoulndt you be safe?
dozerboy 11-22-2009, 08:42 PM No one knows whats cracking pistons for sure a lot of it might be quality issues. There is still a lot of unkonws about the causes of engine failures. I see no reason to run around on a max effort tune all the time mid to high 400s should be fine with good tuning. Especially since we have DSP5 now a max effort tune is only a flip of a switch away.
RedLMM 11-23-2009, 06:18 AM i run one of nicks tunes on a daily basis made 446 and 760 on a mustang dyno and on a stock trans...no problems...i made the switch from ppe too..best desicion i've ever made on the truck nicks tunes are awesome!

Hey, Richard.
What HP EFI Live tune are you running (How much HP did you add)? What do you like better about EFI Live than PPE? Did you get rid of the Hissssssssssssssssssssssssss at idle. Sorry for all the questions - I'm just looking to make a change.
THANKS!
mplteddy 11-23-2009, 10:54 AM I have seen LMM piston failures on even lightly tuned trucks, yet other customers have been running hot tunes without issue. So the LMM is kinda hit or miss, not sure why they fail.
558758 11-23-2009, 12:22 PM well you knew a stupid question was going to be posted sooner or later on this...and here it is. When driving how do you know you have cracked a piston?
mplteddy 11-23-2009, 12:41 PM You'll hear it....kinda hard to miss
fireman976 11-23-2009, 12:41 PM Looking at this post Im getting nervous, I was hoping to get a turbo back exhaust and eliminate dpf and cat while adding a light to moderate tune. Now I'm thinking twice, the truck has 33K on it and I figured when the Bumper to Bumper ran out I would do the mods, but If there is a tattle tale in the computer and I have the the exhaust done and something happens I dont think I could afford repairs. Anyone had to fix this prob? How much $? What are the chances of it shelling. P.S. Not tryiing to hijack the post, I'm glad someone brought this to light.

theres no hp setting or anything on the tune its just a custom tune nick made me for pulling/everday driving i love it! the ppe on level 6 made 441hp on a dyno jet but that was with no lift pump. nicks tune feels way smoother than the ppe the power delivery is constant from an idle not just in the upper rpm's i sold the ppe on here awhile back the hissssing is still there if i bhad it to do over again i'd switch to efi over and over nicks stuff is great! for less than the price of a PPE hot et2 i got the efi live 2 liscences, and 2 tunes...for another 250 you i could get the tune library thats still less than the hot et2! hope it helps! sorry for the long post!
Coker6303 11-25-2009, 10:28 AM I've had my DPF off since 300 miles on the truck (within 1 week of purchase) running anything from 50-120rwhp tunes with no issues. I am pushing 40000 miles now and I absolutely love this truck! I pound on it every day, all or nothing strategy! Drive it like you stole it!
dhiman 11-25-2009, 01:25 PM The Hissss is made by the vanes in the VGT turbo the comp is running tests with the turbo and the vanes move and create a hissss..it goes away after about a minute when the truck is started.

Thanks, this is the type of info I'm looking for. Mild to mod tune and whether or not any problems. I want this truck to last for a few hundred thousand miles. Sounds like you and I drive alike also, only now with fuel prices I try to baby it and my wife is the one that races anyone who pulls next to her. :o:
schuter 11-25-2009, 02:04 PM My DPF fell off right after I left the dealer lot, almost 50,000 miles now and not a single problem....tuned with EFI Live. Of course if I was to crank the HP way up then something would break, but that would be my fault, not EFI Live's.
LETHAL WEAPON 11-25-2009, 02:17 PM Fell off.......yeah right:rolleyes::lol2:

Everyone knows what it is.....
They are trying to get rid of it. The only programmer, AFAIK that eliminates the hiss is the edge(which you have). Not all trucks do this, just the one's programmed by edge. EFI Live, you have to do it yourself to get rid of it.

I backed my tune down to 430 RWHP to be safe. i dont want to see the white smoke of cracking pistions or my tranny to die

Good choice!!!lol
redws6rocket 12-07-2009, 01:36 PM you just never know that is the problem. i ran my 06 around when i had it with the biggest tune nick had and my gt4094 all day everday. went to the drag strip all the time and sled pulled it a few times. never had one problem with it, however i tuned a friends truck with nicks hot lbz tune and he just called to tell me that he cracked a piston. you never know, it is just the chance you take, you have to pay to play!!
