Who here has a CB radio in their truck? Ive got a Cobra 149GTL that id like to install, where did you install yours? Any tips or pointers? Any pictures of yours?

I ended up mounting mine vertically to the driver side of the console since no cubby hole was big enough without MAJOR modification. I take the radio out of the truck when I'm not using it and this has the advantage of easy access. I am the only driver and this mount doesn't interfere with my driving position

I don't have any pics, but could take some later today, if you're interested.

Here is how I did it. If I had an amp (which I don't!), I'd mount it under the cup holder in the console...

Here's mine. Had it installed for over a year, just haven't got it hooked up yet, outta sight outta mind:cool:

No center console, so I opted for this method. Thinking about mounting it up high in the center headliner though, if it'll hold it.

good luck,

wow, that looks great. May just do what you did.

On another note, where did you get that CB and Linear? It looks VERY familiar.......

That is a Uniden PC68LTW (http://www.uniden.com/product.cfm?product=PC68ELITE). I bought it at a little hole-in-the wall CB joint off of I-35W south of I-20. What amp? :o:

That would be a great place for an amp, if you had one. If you were to buy one, how much would you spend to get one, (not that you have one), but maybe you could guess?

Oh I suppose a WAG at one might be in the neighborhood of $115. One could probably do better on the web, but I like paying with cash for some things...if I were to buy one.

Not that you have one though;)

what size linear are you guys running? (those that are)

Kartattack

That's nice, Tophog. My Uniden was wider than that cubby and I estimated it would stick out a lot farther than your Galaxy.

I had to do a little dremel tooling to make it fit. The Galaxy was a little too wide for the opening too.

The Pro-Fit bracket is year specific. You can mount whatever you like on it. Some have XM Roady 2's mounted on it. Most cellular places carry them.

I just had my setup installed at the local CB shop (Signal Communications in Chesapeake, VA) today. I went with the Cobra 25 WX NW ST and a Wilson 1000 rooftop mount http://www.wilsonantenna.com/w1000.htm. My installer put an external speaker under the cup holder (works out very well) and PA speaker behind the front bumper. Nice, clean install.

wow, that looks great. Im debating between buying that smaller model and installing it there, or doing like another guy here posted and mounting it vertical on the left side of the of the console. Soyou can still hear the speaker under the cup holder? was the install fairly easy for the guy or did he have to take alot of stuff out to do it? Just wondering....thanks.......

Yep, I can hear it very well. I was curious about that when he suggested it as it seemed to me it would be muffled, but he assured me it would be easy to hear, and he was right. I think the install was fairly easy for him, but he has the experience. I left it with him for 2 hours and he was just finished when I got back.

The Wilson I got was the roof top mount... hole cut in roof (ouch... glad I wasn't there to see that). Not sure about mounting the magnet mount on the bed, but they did have mounts that went into the stake holes on the bed, if you want to go that route.

Im using a Firestik 4' Fiberglass whip antenna, mounted on my tool box with a truck mirror mount. The tip of my antenna is about 9 feet off of the ground. Also, I tuned it with my freinds SWR meter. Very important for range.

well, i ended up getting a nightwatch Cobra cb, 4' firestik k40, RK road mic, and got it tuned and peak. sounds great. but what pisses me off is i thought i lost my old Cobra 148F GTL, and today i was cleaning out my storage unit and found it! rats!

Oh well, ill install it tomorrow, and put the Nightwatch Cobra on Ebay.

My next question is, is a Palomar Linear worth the $$$$$? Salesman was pushing it, but i didnt know, so said no...............

Lyle, what is the dimensions of that 25?

LyleP

Hi Turbo,

Sorry to take so long to reply. I had the new truck out on it's first towing mission! :)

The 25 is 6.25" W by 2.25" H. can't get the tape in there to measure the depth. The installer did have to cut the plastic "pocket" to fit the radio.

Hey DuckhunterInTN
Im running the Corba rig like Maverick. I put the unit under the front center seat and ran the connection to the mike under the cup holder. Hung the mike on the opening just to the right of the A/C contorls. I installed a Firestick antenea using a Firestick braket made to install in a stake bed hole. Install it in my forward right hand side stake bed hole. Ran the the antenna wire down the under the bed and thru the vent opening in the back of the cab. Inside the cab I ran the antenna wire under the kick plates to just under the drive seat. Made SURE it did not interfear with the operation of the seat. Works 5.0. If you need pictures let me know.
I did try installing the antenna on the left front part of the widowshield, however I got alot of wind noise.

DuckhunterInTN

bearwolf46,

Really, you got a lot of wind noise with the antenna on the front? How do you like the CB? Is the handset too heavy? How well does it pick up?

So where did you guys go thru the firewall to get to the battery....if you have pics it would be nice, still looking for a hole somewhere so I don't have to drill

dixie27
07-07-2005, 12:35 AM
You can pull power from under the steering column- there should be a bundle of wires- unclip the bundle - find the red wire and make a tiny splice-attach your power , wrap up- saves having to drill through the wall;) might have to remove a few dash pieces-- run the cobra 75 as well- bad little due for its size- sound is very clear- also allows very clean install-

I run a 3' firestick- driverside bed corner - run down stake pocket, under bed zip tied to wire bundle, up through rubber gromet driverside under carpet to console- never knew it was there!

Unless you have one of the tiny CB's those don't have enough depth.

That Cobra looks like it was made for the Silverado.
Did you have to cut out the rear of the cubby or only drill for the wiring?
If you had to cut, do you have the Bose amp back there or not?

I love that installation... that may very well be the radio I need to get.

And... if you had one, what would be the best way to turn it on and off?
Back in the 80s when I didn't have an amp, I would have mounted it in plain sight below the freq counter (I heard that some radios like the SuperStar 360FM actually had sliders!) and used the switch on the front panel.

You wouldn't leave it on all the time, would you?

I had to cut out the back of the "cubby" as well as some of the dash
plastic behind that (the radio is fairly deep) to get the face flush.

Personally, I feel that this version of the Cobra radio is "cheap".
If there was another version that fit that location as well, I would
probably try it. It picks up too much alt noise (yes I have filters/caps &
grounds) where my Uniden did not. In my opinion, the Uniden
used better quality knobs & switches(etc). Oh well, as time goes
on, there'll problably be something that will work that has the
features I wanted...

Good luck,

T.
