: 6.2 started to knock real bad

I have a 82 6.2 with 105,000 miles and never gave me problems till the other day started it up and it is making a horrible knocking noise it the area of the torque convertor area, well the best I can tell that is where it sounds like it coming from, Has a rebuilt trans and torque convertor with 3500 miles on them fluid is good color, The knock is there at idle and goes away at around 2500 RPM and when driving it is not always there just when I let off the gas pedal it is there and some times just out of the blue for a sec. the oil is good no metal in it and normal color. And when the oil cap is removed when running there is smoking out I never check this before so dont know how much is normal but its like a steaming tea pot. I am new to diesel engines and wondering if you guys could give me some starting points to check out or if you think something is REALLY wrong. What about Injector knock? Or the ip timing ??
Thanks
Mark

I'm glad to hear that the transmission has been out recently, it is likely the torque converter or a cracked flexplate.

I would second that, or the bolts are backing out, remove the cover and inspect the TC bolts, if tight then start it up and see if you can pinpoint the noise better. Could also be the starter, the gear could be bouncing off the flexplate.

the tc bolts are tight and the starter gear dont seam to be moving around
and I got a video not that good but will give you a little idea of how it HORRIBALE it sounds. I cant really pin point the exact spot of the noise but is for sure coming from the Torque convertor area, The time's that the noise does go away in the video is when I rev it up to about 2000 rpm's, Will a flexplate just crack or will it get worse and worse? What a great way to start out opening day Elk Season

Ok, this is what you do, disconnect the TC and if the noise goes away, its the trans, if not, you have engine issues. I am leaning towards a bad trans.

so this noise could be in the tranny? oh great. I will get on it tommorow and let you know. Thanks for your help

a bad flex plate can cause that sort of noise. the flex plate can break in a rough circle around the bolt holes and then jam so the torque converter is still spun when the engine is running, but it will make a hell of a racket.

if I disconnect the T/C from the flex plate and start it would a bad flex plate still make a bad noise even if its not under tension from spinning the T/C?
and would a bad flex plate noise go away with the higher RPM's ? and would this be noise that a bad convertor would make??
Thanks

If you disconnect it, this will eliminate the noise if it's caused by the trans or flexplate.

well thanks for all your guys help it is for sure the Flex Plate that thing is tore up I can move it up and down about 1/2 inch and front to back about 1 inch or so and the bolt holes are all rounded out. I am having a hard time finding one for my 6.2 but I am thinking that one for a small block chevy should work right?? and what about the number of teeth. and do they make one that a little more beefy the one on there seems like thick sheet metal
Again thanks for all your guys help

Not sure of the interchange but check Rock Auto.

As for thickness, a stock one will hold massive amounts of power. If its cracked or broken, its usually do to improper installation or the block is missing its locating dowels.

That looks fine. I'd reuse it.

No but seriously there's your racket. I've got a flexplate in the back of my pickup that did the same thing. Sheared right around the bolt holes and then jammed so the torque converter still turned with engine power.

Were you able to find another flexplate? As far as i know one from a 350 will not work. They diesel flywheel or flexplate(depending on transmission) has a different number of teeth than the gasser one. I know when i had to hunt down a Diesel application flywheel all the part numbers were different for the gas flywheel.

I have a flexplate here but it's got a 2-3 inch section of teeth that are 1/2 gone. Looks like the starter chewed them up at one point in time. Make sure to re-install that starter brace. My blazer was missing it, and the damaged flywheel teeth is the result as the starter wants to twist without the rear support bracket in place.

yeah I order the new one threw napa and should be here tommorow. hopefully its the right one would not be the first time I order threw them and got the wrong part.
I am glad it is only that and not that expensive of a part ($63.00) but what a pain to replace it

ya, i've blown a couple flex plates in SBC's. last one i bought was a self balancing one for a SBC 400 and it was under 40 from a transmission parts wholesaler

I just got a pickup with the good ole 6.2 that knocks pretty good. But I don't think its the flywheel since it uses a quart of oil every 100 miles. Found a used 6.2 with the banks turbo but it has a lot of blow by. For 200 bucks kinda wonder if just blow by with the turbo would be better then the knock. The guy I bought it from has driven it like this for 2 yrs before parking for two years. Says it sounds and burns oil just like it did before parked
