I have a 2003 chevy with the Duramax and Allison. Two weeks ago I was towing my trailer through some northern California mountains and felt that it was unsafe to go over 25-30 mph. It was dark and hardly any traffic so I proceeded at that rate. After several miles of creeping along I passed one of the warning signs with radar that reads out your vehicle speed and to my supprise I found out that my truck was traveling at about twice the speed indicated on the speedometer. I later called Onstar and had them run diagnostics but no problem could be identified. I'm assuming that the speedometer is driven by a computer, no speedometer cable. After I restarted the engine the next morning the speedometer returned to normal operation. Two days ago the speedometer had the same problem which went away after I turned the engine off and restarted it.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Was the dealer able to fix it? Is there a TSB?
Thanks for your help.

I had a problem with my 2003 where the entire gauge cluster stopped working. Dealer replaced it at no charge. Sometimes they just break. They are electronic. When they replaced it, the milage was correct, but the hourmeter was reset back to 0.

Mine has been doing that thing for some time now. Right now as its parked in my driveway, the needle is at 50 mph. Yeah, it sux. Somedays higher and somedays lower. It does make it back to 0 mph sometimes but not for long. Got to take it in but I heard there is a long down time. They better give me a loaner.......

Had my cluster replaced about 4000 miles ago, would get stuck. I wonder if over sized tires speed up the cluster failure?

leaky,
Here is an interesting thread discussing cluster problems. Of special interest is post #26 from Max Payne. It is a TSB from GM discussing the high failure of the gauge stepper motor. It may be related to your problem.

The dealer service advisor said that they would send my instrument cluster to somewhere in southern California and they would replace the steping motor that drives the speedometer. Well 4 days later when I received the truck back the speedometer was working, but i noticed that the fuel guage now doesnt read Full after I fill the tank and now the oil pressure reads about 6 pounds lower when the engine is warmed up and Im crusing at 2ooo rpm. Sounds like they didnt fix my instrument cluster but gave me someone elses. Also now the DIC doesnt read out oil change interval, inst miles per gal, miles left on tank and all the other info accessed by pushing the two buttons on the steering wheel that come with the $48,000 truck. It sounds like others have mentioned that they gave me a 2005 instrument cluster that isnt compatable with my 2003 Silverado. Does anyone have any specifics on what has to be programmed to get proper operation. Without this information Im sure that they'll keep putting in new instrument clusters one right after the other until someone discovers a GM TSB. Help please.

I too, noticed that my oil pressure and fuel gauge were slightly off when I got my "new" cluster in. Not sure why.

Well add me to the list of defective instrument clusters. My speedo is just dead and stuck at zero. Does anyone have the TSB number? I have 58k on my '04. Has any one had any luck with the general honoring the 100k warranty on this or is it just another check to the stealer?

I called the service manager this afternoon. I was told no warranty under the 100k Diesel warranty and no warranty simply because of a TSB. However they did agree to give me a "good Will" warranty and fix the speedo for free. I will have to rent a car but for the first time in a while I am really pleased with what GM and Al Serra GMC are doing. The last thing I needed during the first week of Bear season was to explain more truck expenses to the CFO!

Well, all the gauges, speedo and tach on my '02 2500HD work just fine, but my shift quadrant indicator (PRNDL) and odometer/trip odometer have disappeared. This started about 2 months ago and they would work intermittently, then about 2 weeks ago, nothing. I checked the fuses inside the door and under the hood and they were OK, so I took it to the selling dealer and they diagnosed it as "ICM (Instrument Cluster Module) failing to communicate" and said it would require an entire new instrument cluster for $400 plus labor. -:t
The truck has about 104,000 miles on it (I guess). I had to have the entire instrument cluster replaced at 33,000 miles (under warranty) because the voltmeter was reading a steady 17 volts. I haven't had the batteries load tested--they're the factory originals, but seem to have plenty of power to start the truck.
Does anyone know a good source of rebuilt instrument clusters? I've looked on E-Bay, and done a search for sources, but no luck. Also, how difficult is it to replace it yourself?
This is really the only problem I've had with this truck, but it really p****s me off to have to replace an entire instrument cluster to deal with a single problem gauge!

well I got 20 miles from the dealer with the new IC and my odometer fraked out and read ERROR. Then the whole DIC went down. Back for a second exchanged/rebuilt cluster. Four days of rentals and my good will instrument cluster is getting a little pricey. Not upset with the dealer but it really pi**es me off that GM has a problem this big and they dont do a straight warranty or recall. I also had my tailgate straps replaced. One is longer than the other so all the weight will be on one strap. Great improvement.
