EFI Live is about as far as you can get from junk and useless.
Just like any tool, it is only as good as the person using it. EFI Live has a steep learning curve but once you learn to use it, it is the best that there is to offer. The possibilities are almost endless. When you buy EFI, most, if not all vendors will include a starter tune with your purchase. The starter tune is usually aimed towards towing. If you're in the market for more power than a tow tune, talk to the vendor, he may cater to your wishes or you can buy a more advanced tune from them.
Removing the top speed limiter is just the tip of the iceberg.
What do you need besides gauges?:
-Patience
-Time.....to read the plethora of information in the EFI Live section.
-And a piggy bank labeled "Transmission Fund" and possibly another labeled "37's are too expensive to be doing burnouts Fund"
I suggest downloading the EFI Live software and looking at a stock tune and a modded tune out of the Tuning Library. It will give you an idea of what you are up against. The software will be in "Demo Mode" but you can still do everything except saving changes.

Best way to learn is to dive right in and do it.:D
There are many great hand held tuners that will exceed your goals if you are looking for something that you wont have to devote hours upon hours to learn.
Your Bully Dog isn't the most popular choice in the DMax community. If you really want to ditch it for something else, Predator (inexpensive with good power and lots of features) or PPE Standard (less $ than EFI, great tunes, lots of features) would be my recommendations.

If you were to get EFILive from one of our diesel vendors they would normally include a custom tune for your truck. That custom tune in many cases will either give you similar or better results than an average handheld device, and to top it off you also end up with a programming tool so you can modify that tune, or create your own.
