: New here w/big problem
jammingmcV2 06-02-2005, 07:24 PM Hey guys, I used to jamminGMC and now am jamminGMCV2. Anyhoo, I was pulling my brothers boat the other day, about 3000# and tried going up a hill and ended up having mega trouble going up it. Bear in mind, I have climbed this hill before with a 7000# excavator with little or no struggle.
I hit the hill at about 65 mph and topped it out at 45. The hill was about a 4.5 grade and approx. 3 miles long. No black smoke, lots of RPM's (4400), no tranny slippage and absolutley NO power.
I have never had a pulling problem with this truck. Where do I go and what do I do?
I also need to mention that about 2 weeks ago, I experienced my first runaway engine with this truck. I cranked it and it started and went full bore!! Thought I was dreaming and cranked it up again and again it went full bore. Had it towed to the garage and they started and it idled like nothing ever happened. Could something have broken? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
1994 GMC K1500 X-Cab w/6.5 turbo diesel and 4L80E tranny. Truck has 95582 miles on it.

Bagalac 06-02-2005, 08:57 PM the no power thing sounds to me like a temp TDC 236 (over boost) which wuold cut your fuela nd give you this type of scenario and since the fuel is cut you won't see the black smoke as it sits in limp mode..
check your solenoid and vacuum system to make sure everythign is working order and your actuator isn't getting stuck

DieselPro 06-02-2005, 09:52 PM Your runaway or no control on the throttle is the injection pump going bad. Your truck is under 120k miles so the pump is still under warranty.
jammingmcV2 06-02-2005, 10:21 PM hey bagalac and dieselpro, thanks for the info!! I am gonna have the injector pump checked out as well as the overboost.

gmenor 06-02-2005, 10:27 PM Didn't notice if you have gauges installed - this can tell a lot on what your engine is doing.
DieselPro 06-02-2005, 10:43 PM Sometimes the computer will show no code. I've fixed half a dozen "rev's with no control" by changing the pump.
Here's how to get warranty:
Replace fuel filter and clean out bowl> Dealer can deny warranty with water or scum in the filter housing.
Report the engine stalls or quits with no warning.
Report the engine revs up with no control or warning> might not report that as they may try to sell you a throttle pedal assembly.
If they try to push a clean tank and lines deal on you find another dealer.
Make sure you have fuel pressure at the bleeder before you take it.
Might be nice to have a copy of the warranty in your hand when you get there.
If all this gets you a free pump you might consider sending this site a little donation in my name of course.

jammingmcV2 06-03-2005, 01:23 PM hey gmenor, no guages yet. Dieselpro, I will move forth with this ASAP and will donate some money if this works.

DieselChick 06-07-2005, 03:18 PM Just a question in regards to the warranty in reference to an ordeal I had with my local dealer when they replaced my injector "under warranty" In the warranty does it state that they need to take a diesel sample and check for segments and if so you have to clean the fuel tank or get a new one. Is this true?
chevydiesel 06-07-2005, 03:48 PM It's true, they'll test the fuel "quality" so to speak, make sure it's diesel that is in the tank and if there are a lot of particulates in the fuel, that is contamination.
That's why the recommendation to replace the fuel filter and clean the fuel bowl before going to the dealer. Because this is going to be the first place they'll look for crap in the fuel system. If they find contaminaiton, they'll mandate dropping the tank before they will authorize a pump replacement.
Better safe than sorry.
DieselPro 06-07-2005, 07:01 PM The "bad" dealer will want you to drop the tank for cleaning as it is not under warranty and that's their "Cash Cow".
wi65td 06-07-2005, 09:40 PM Your runaway or no control on the throttle is the injection pump going bad. Your truck is under 120k miles so the pump is still under warranty.
Why am I shaking my head ? Did I miss something? I thought the warranty was 120k miles OR 10yrs, whichever came first. If the truck is a '94, it's out of warranty regardless of miles.
jgreenlees 06-07-2005, 10:26 PM The (GOOD) dealer will airate the tank and take a sample, the special policy is 11 years or 120,00 miles. If you change the filter and there are ANY metal particles in the bowl, go to your local trans shop and buy 4 trans pan magnets and put them in your fuel tank to keep the metal in the tank and not the pump. If you have metal in the filter G.M. will still buy the pump you pay to clean the tank. FAIR is FAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!
DieselPro 06-07-2005, 10:36 PM What if the metal came from the defective injection pump, who pays then?
knkreb 06-07-2005, 10:40 PM Where else does the metal come from anyway? (Well, except from the fuel source)
DieselPro 06-07-2005, 10:44 PM Diesel Chick > Far as I know a fuel sample is not required, If so demand documentation. I have installed several pumps in my shop and the customer submitted the receipt for reimbursement and not once have they requested a sample. Dealers (stealers) have all sorts of gimicks to take your money on warranty claims. If they charged you for cleaning the tank to get warranty call GM and complain. Filter is not warranty.
DieselPro 06-07-2005, 10:47 PM Metal can come from the injection pump failing and in some cases the electric fuel pump. I suspect the interior of the tank can flake off some metal also. The fuel filter catches the metal in all cases, as I have never found metal in the fuel inlet screen of the injection pump.
