I have glanced through about 300 posts on my first visit to this board and everyone seems to get the answers that they need, I thought I'd give it a try.

Here's the situation...
I have a 1997 Gmc 3500 with a 6.5 Diesel in it. All of a sudden It aquired a heavy smoke condition. And when I mean smoke I mean people think the truck is on fire :-( I thought I would take a swing at it and have the injection timing adjusted. No change I'm getting oil out of the tailpipe if I let it idle in one place for too long. The only conclusion I can come up with is that the rings have taken a crap. If there's any other avenue's to persue to try to diagnosis this issue please feel free to comment.

Thanks in advance
T.J.

It is also possible that the turbo is leaking oil and the resultant oily exhaust vapor is condensing in the tailpipe, leading to the oil drip out the exhaust.

Not likely, but 'possible'

Cowracer, I was going to say the same thing. A freind blew a turbo seal in a grapple truck and the smoke was incredible. Check your oil level too, if it's smoking that bad.

What color is the smoke?

Check your oil fill. See if you have a blowing wind shooting out of it (it shouldn't).

You can also check to see if it's water vapor or smoke by placing a mirror, or piece of glass up to it and see if it condenses or not.

Hey TJ welcome to the site how about updating your sig per welcome note so we don't have to guess the rest of your configuration, give us more info to ponder when drafting a answer to your question. Are you consuming oil, if not and still have heavy black smoke I also suspect wastegate problems, no air and heavy fuel request makes lots of black smoke and high EGT, you have gauges ???

No gauges unfortunatly. This is a stock GMC 3500 utility body style truck. Well I took off the intake manifold and have oil residue there. I also noticed a teaspoon or tablespoon (whatevers smaller) of oil on the intake side of the turbo. I was thinking of putting some pressure (about 40 lbs sound right?) in the oil intake side of the turbo and capping the returnside and see if I get any leakdown. ( too see if I blew a seal in the turbo) Make and cense??

Check back soon.. Thanks
