I just got my truck back from a warranty repair where they replaced the instrument cluster with an "exchange instrument cluster". Original problem was that the DIC died ... totally black.

Now my odometer works, but I also have a Business and Personal trip odometer (note: truck does not have the steering wheel mounted controls) which do not work and the hour meter shows 1230 hours instead of ~330 hours that I know are on the truck.

Do I have a right to a new instrument cluster or will they just give me grief and have to live with this one. I am guessing that it only needs a reprogramming to fix the hour meter and trip odometer problem.

We always have the cluster provider set the mileage and the hour meter, as far as I know dealers cannot reset the hour meter, at least I have never ran across a way to. As for the other 2 added items, not sure, never ran into that.

I would tell the dealer to fix it right. Diesel engine values and wear is based on both mileage AND number of hours.

They are doing you a dis-service by not installing a cluster with appropriate mileage and hours indicated on it.

Do you have to set the mileage and hour meter on the cluster before you install it ???? I thought the display was simply that ... a display which shows you the miles and hours which are stored in the PCM, BCM, TCM, etc... Not sure exactly where this data comes from, but I know that at least the mileage is stored in other locations other than the display.

Dealer called today .... said they would order another exchange cluster and have it "set" to the hour meter that I told them it should be. OK, this is nice, but shouldn't that information be coming from the truck PCM's (PCM, TCM, BCM etc...) and not me. Heck, I could tell them it should be 100 hours and not 300 hours if I wanted too....

BTW, how much luck do the dealers have with "exchange" clusters anyway?

Hours and mileage are not stored anywhere else besides the cluster.

All the cluster and radio replacements are done with exchange units.
