Hey guys. This is my first post on this forum but I’ve been doing a lot of reading here lately. I did a search on my question but I didn’t come up with anything that specifically addressed my issue. Let me start with a little background, add the issues, and then you guys should be able to help me out. :)

I just recently purchased a 2001 Duramax 2500HD 4x4. It’s a nice truck and the first diesel I’ve had since I sold my gasser truck. My only complaint is that the wheels look a little pinny on such a large truck. One day on my way home from work, I passed a dealership where they sell brand new trucks, but with lift kits and larger aftermarket wheels and stuff on them. I stopped to take a peek to see what they were using. I don’t have any specs on what size lift they were using but they were on Ford trucks anyway so that probably won’t even be very helpful. The important thing though is that they were using 35x12.5-17 Procomp Xterrain wheels. They looked very nice.

One more item to mention is that everyday, I park in a parking ramp for work. The sign says that there is a max vehicle height of 6’ 10”. This kinda limits me putting lift kits or stuff like that on my truck. I know I could probably get away with a small lift but I’d rather not if I don’t have to.

Now to my question. Can I fit these 35x12.5” tires on my stock 2500HD without a lift? I’m okay with trimming this and that but I don’t want something that’ll rub over every bump and turn in the road.

Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

There have been people that have done that on with using stock rims. Check out the old 2500 forum (it's locked for posting). I think he cranked his torsion bars all the way and put 2" lift blocks on the rear. After that, I think he said he had minor trimming. I don't know how high the top of his truck was from the ground, but I know it had to lift it pretty decent. I only have 285s on mine and it lifted the truck some. I would say the top of the truck is about 6'6" off the ground and that is with the suspension set at stock height.

I've had a set of the XTerrains in that size, on H2 rims. They will fit with a crank of the TBars, with some trimming. They are roughly the same size as the Stock H2 Takeoffs so many (including myself) use.

I'm pretty sure there's info in a thread posted by "HEMIEATER" . Just look under all posts by him and look for a thread called "315's on stock wheels" or something like that. I've checked it out a few times myself cuz I'd like to do that as well. Maybe you could pm him and ask if he'd measure his truck for you. Most people are quite helpful on this site. Good luck

be very careful putting such large tires on stock rims. i think the stock rims are too thin for 35's. check the proper ratings for that width rim.

if you do have wider rims, you will need some with negative offset (a la h2 takeoffs) to help keep turning radius tight. even with negative offset rims, it would be a miracle not to rub on occasion with 35's with the stock torsion bars cranked 100%. i am not a fan of green keys because that will just get you deeper into trouble with no downtravel (terrible ride), and big angles on the cv's.

so... it will work with proper rims, but you will prob rub, have a rough ride, and wear out your cv's. that's what i have going on right now. but it really looks t!ts.

Here's some pics that I have of my truck. You should be able to see them from the link in my signature too. Let me know if you want any other pics.

Thanks for the responses guys. I never said I would stick with the stock rims. I had intended on buying some wider ones. That being said, the only real factor I'm thinking will come into play is the overall wheel diameter. The stockers are 265/65's I believe which calculates to a little over 30" in diameter. Would I be able to get away with say a 33" tire diameter? I'm not looking to go too extreme but just something a little meatier than what I have now.

Thanks!

The stockers are 245/75/16s. 33s will fit fine. 255/85/16s are 33 inches tall and are approved to run on the 6.5" wide stock rim. 285/75/16 are the same height as the 255/85s but are about 1.25 inches wider and should be run on a wider wheel like a 16x8.
