: 4wd vs. 2wd launch
teamhertz 06-02-2005, 08:20 AM What are the pro and cons of launching in 4wd vs 2wd? I see many people say they race in 4wd? Do you disengage the 4wd at any time in the 1/4? What components need to be upgraded to race in 4wd?
Thanks!
Mike
Slick 06-02-2005, 08:31 AM You cannot disengage 4x4 going down the track. Even if you push the 2x4 button it will not disengage until the load is gone.
You will need to lower your torsion bars, and I would recommend some Super Diesel tie-rods sleeves.
On edit: The advantage of launching in 4x4 is that you have all the traction in the world, even while launching with a substantial amount of boost. A high boost 4x4 launch will humble even the fastest cars on the street. One disadvantage, would be more strain on parts, and you lose more mph on the top end. The pros outweigh the cons IMO.
McRat 06-02-2005, 11:42 AM Unless you are willing to invest $$$ in making the rear end hook, 4WD is the way to go. As diesel dragracing gets more popular, don't be surprised if the emphasis switches to 2WD though. Once they figure out how to hook them, they should have a big advantage over 4x4.
Micheal Tomac 06-02-2005, 11:52 AM on the street and track the holeshot advantage of a 4wd launch will sometimes mess with the guy's head in the other lane and he will miss a shift (at least that's what they claim after getting beat)
McRat 06-02-2005, 12:01 PM There is certainly something to said for running a 4x4 with dirt tires on it and cutting 1.8's or better from a stoplight. Not even a Viper will keep up with you for the first 300' feet.

If I was driving a Viper and seen a P/U take off like that I would be like  . Guess it would mess them in the lanes. I would be depressed for the rest of the 1/4 :D.
What kind of times do you thing everyone is losing by not having the 2wd "hook up" if you compared a truck ruinng 4wd vs. 2wd? Thanks for the info.
BullydogPowered 06-02-2005, 01:37 PM any chance of bending tie rods with just a tuner? would like to try a 4x4 launch but not if im going to bend my tie rods since truck is daily driver.
IdahoRob 06-02-2005, 02:18 PM You'll bend them with just a tuner, you can do it stock if you built enough boost.

While I would not suggest it, I ran mid 14's without sleeves.
Diesel Dragon 06-02-2005, 11:24 PM Hell I ran 13.3 on NOS at 105 and a 1.9 60' time with out sleeves and survived the day.
I do have SD sleaves now though
DD :D
patrick 06-02-2005, 11:34 PM Mine bent a little 2 weeks ago. Edge level 4 boost launch. now my steering wheel shakes its head NO No No No .....
BullydogPowered 06-03-2005, 09:02 AM glad i havent tried it then. price on sleeves?
toy fever 06-03-2005, 09:55 AM Shoot Super Diesel a PM. I believe they are $125.
IdahoRob 06-03-2005, 12:24 PM The're sweet. Took me all of 15min. to install, and no need to realign. The directions were vague, so I called "SD" and he told me the proper way.

B-rad 06-08-2005, 01:08 AM let me get this straight. im having a hard time over here. i can run my truck on the strip,1/4 mile,in 4 wheel drive the whole way down the track? i have yet to cut better than a 2.33 60' so far and you guys are saying i can run 4wd, boost it up against the brake and get 2.0 60's and not hurt the truck? and were all takin about the same thing? concrete and asphalt, not dirt? if the answer to this question is yes im going to be a happy boy.

Big Blue has aprox. 200-300 4wd 1/4 mile passes with no problems. But like suggested above get the SD sleaves :D
Slick 06-08-2005, 08:39 AM No I'm afraid you won't be doing 2.0 second 60 times, but how does 1.7 sec. sound? Know how happy of a boy are you?
Depending on weight and how big a tune you are running, there are many here cutting 1.7's consistently, and some 1.6's.:ro)

Hi Paul :D Welcome :ro)

Welcome Paul!!
Here's what happened to the last smack-talkin' Viper:
http://www.2fdr.com/k/bigbluevsviper.wmv
God rest his soul. He never knew what hit him and passed out from the diesel fumes. RIP. :D
So you gonna tweak your truck?
tt_paul 06-09-2005, 01:23 PM Hey, guys. When I saw your names, I just had to jump into this thread and do a little ribbing:D
You know me, I always leave my cars stock..........for about a week):h Yes, I'd love to mod the truck. I'm just figuring on intake, exhaust, and a power module. The last part is killing me. I'm reading about the Edge and I think that's what I want to buy (with Attitude) but the occasional problem with '05 models have me a little worried. Any thoughts?
McRat 06-09-2005, 01:34 PM You can boost your power about 80-90rwhp max without beefing the trans clutches.
There are several options in that power range.
Two basic types:
Harness boxes that plug in under the hood and let you add power on-the-fly, but do not remove the top speed limiter (95mph) or read/reset codes.
PCM programmers that do remove the limiter, you must shut the engine off to change programs, and they read and reset codes.
Some ones that deserve a look:
PPE Hot LLY - A programmer that has a range of power settings from mild to wild. The most powerful LLY tuner currently available.
Predator - A programmer that can read real-time data and puts out good power as well. Cheap.
Edge EZ - A harness box that you can put on in 2 minutes and drive. Excellent passing and towing power. Cheap.
Edge w/Attitude - More power, more features, comes with a pyrometer. I haven't tested the "revised" version of this, but some of my friends have said it's good.
Banks 6-gun - Another harness box with the most power available in a Harness box. Great street manners.
It depends mostly on what your goals are.
McRat 06-09-2005, 01:36 PM PS - Don't expect big gains with an intake. I'd do that last if at all.
tt_paul 06-09-2005, 01:50 PM Hmmmmm..... I don't want to hijack this thread so I'll PM you some questions if you don't mind.
B-rad 06-09-2005, 07:56 PM well dang i been wastin' my time and gas runnin' in 2wd. so guess i need some sleeves. thanks guys
VFRRider 06-09-2005, 08:22 PM Add Quad Stealth tuner to that list, 6 tune levels up to 135 hp, read/erase codes, remove top speed limiter, correct for different tire sizes, trans relearn and raise rev limiter.
