I have a 2004 Duramax Crew Cab 4x4 that I just bought used, it has 40,000 miles on it. This morning when I started it to go to work, the starter didn't kick in all the way or something and it done a little grinding. I let up on the switch and tried it again and all seemed ok. I'm wondering if these things have a starter problem?

I've read on this forum where some have replaced flywheels, flexplates and starters. I'm not sure what the GM warranty covers and for how long. I was told at the dealer where I bought it that it was 3 years/36,000 miles, then 100,000 miles on the engine. I'm past the 36,000 mile mark. The dealer gave a 30 day warranty on it and I want to get it fixed if this starter is going to be a problem. I've only owned it for 10 days now and the dealer where I bought it is 200 miles away.

I would consider calling them to discuss this and find out what they are willing to do. If nothing else you might check with a vendor here about getting one or checking on ebay. Sometimes you can find them on there. Just remember, if you buy from a Vendor you are getting a product that will be backed up with help and possible warranty unlike purchasing from ebay... Good luck...

I once had a local Allison tranny shop install a Suncoast upgrade and later discovered they had cracked the starter casing on the tranny work. Starter had to come off for tranny removal. Starter sounded funny and I soon learned the problem from a local Chevy house. Chevy house said that the starter is easily busted if you are not careful. (Nothing out of my pocket) Tranny shop would had fixed the problem, they said. hm......
Might be your problem.

Mackin, are you saying that my starter at 40,000miles is still under warranty? And is this included in the 100,000mile warranty?

I thank everyone for their replies, but I'm still wondering if these machines have a starter problem?

Thanks

The dealer told ME that I could get the solenoid warranted but I knew it was broke by outside sources,so I foot the bill.

My Ebay starter is here,I haven't opened the box yet.Quick

I have got a couple ebay starters and they all look to be very good quality. Havent put one on a truck yet, but bench tested them and they sound good.

You can never have enough spare parts.....

I have had my used '02 for about 6 weeks. My starter was doing this at least once a day. I replaced my starter last weekend with an ebay unit that came with a 2 year warranty. I am very happy to say that it has worked flawlessly for the past week, problem solved!!!

My starter went out at around 25k miles. My dealer picked it up from my house and fixed it.
