Sometimes shifting into 5th, it's notchy, sometimes it's smooth as silk. So I had it at the dealer the other day for some "we-owe" work done on it, mainly getting the horn to honk, I just haven't had time to take it in. I commented that sometimes the shift is smooth, and sometimes it's notchy.
Service told me that there is a TSB out for the new flywheel. If there is, which I have no idea if there is or not, well, it's getting a new one anyway. Wow, a service department that actually didn't make me find something and bring it to their attention first. I figger' that I'll have them check out the clutch, I mean, if it's going to be all separated if it's going to need a clutch soon I may as well get it done.
Sorry for the rambling, time for an 8 hour nap.

Dan,
Is this the factory DMF and clutch? How many miles on your truck? I'm on my 3rd DMF, the last is the new and improved model. I have about 21k miles including 4k miles towing a 10.5k pound 5er and the setup is holding fine. I know have around 119k miles on the truck.
In the 2 failures, I never had any shifting issues, the DMF would just rattle when the clutch was depressed.
When you say notchy, do mean the clutch would chatter???

Welcome Dan,
I second MaxRock, I never had any shifting issues even when my discs were down to the burnt toast stage. This is my 3rd DMF as well, however I am headed towards a 4th as this one is starting to rattle with about 20K on it and it was supposedly the newest version but now I am wondering?? There is post here in the ZF-6 OEM which has the TSB and the VIN breakpoints, you can check there and see if your truck falls into it. You can also ask the tech's to run your VIN and find out if it has been done to your truck before. We are working on an SMF and clutch kit and will have more details soon.

Mine has a kinda notchy shift into 3rd and 4th, the others are fine. My tranny is a lot harder to shift when cold. I sometimes feel like a catch going into 4th, but not every time. I had the stealer check it and they said "no problem found", of course you know how that goes. I guess they just drove it and it went in gear, so it's OK. I figure I've got 3 more years and 34,500 miles to find out if it is normal.

shiftin into 4th is always the hardest shift. Tryin to do it fast is nearly impossible. Part of the problem is the shift stick is poorly designed. Too long and too far from the drivers seat, and the shift distance is also too far. I am gonna make a new shifter and see if it helps. But I expect your issue is not too unusual. It would only have something to do with the clutch not releasing all the way, IMHO.

I guess one reason I do not have the problem is I only use the clutch when taking off.

Me too, but I still melted 3 flywheels.
When my flywheels went bad they would not release all the way. Real tough at stoplights.

Hmmm...I dunno if it's the original stuff. I imagine it is though. The truck has 49,500 miles on it, I dare say the original flywheel lasted pretty good.:p: -:t
I guess it's just me. Thanks for the replys.
Have a good one!!
