Alright so I'm thinking about building me a duramax burban and having some questions. First off I am having some troubles finding a 3/4 ton suburban equipped like I want so is it possible to buy a 3/4 ton suburban frame and swap the 1/2 ton body on it and use the axles and such off the 2500hd pickup donor truck I get?

well guys, the wheels are turning I just bought an 06 suburban that is super clean and dirt cheap. Hopefully by next week we will begin the tear down of both vehicles. I will try to take tons of pics and keep everyone up to date.

the pickup is set to be in friday night so I will start tearing it down this weekend. The sub probably wont be here till next week but I think I'm gonna just take the bodies off both and work from the top. I have never done a swap like this so it's bound to be interesting. I was wondering if any of you guys that have done it have any tips for me. I'm not interested in selling this to make money, just want the ultimate family vehicle. I was especially needing an exhaust system built for it if anyone can do it for me. I am so excited to start. can't wait

i'm hearing that my electronics may not meet up as I have an 05 lly and an 06 suburban but I plan to basically make the suburban an 05 so how much trouble should it be. I plan on using all wiring and computers, etc off of the 05. Guess I will find out. I got the suburban really cheap so unless someone has an 05 2500 suburban they'd like to trade me I guess I'm about to find out how it goes.

i have done both, I believe the length is the same. I would look into an mbrp turbo back. Fab brackets if need be. I loved my mbrp 4" on my LMM!

well i ordered a 4" turbo back this morning set to be in tomorrow am. I told him to send me the kit for cclb b/c it was same as sb plus an extra pipe so I will have some extra to play with. Also found some 2" lift blocks on ebay and got them ordered so hopefully they will be here by monday. We are getting the front diff out now and have all wiring harnesses and fuel lines removed. Going to call my local parts store and see if they can get me some fuel lines to run. I'm undecided on what material to use. Man this seems to be coming together..errr.. apart pretty quick. If all goes well maybe I will hear the suburban purr by next weekend. I know that's pretty optimistic but you gotta have goals. more to come....

the crew cab 2500hd and the suburban frame are completely different. It would take hours of fabrication and shortening the pickup frame for it to fit. And the duramax simply bolts up in the Suburban frame. Anyways the swap is going great so far. I have to send the driveshaft out to get about 2 ft chopped off. Hopefully it won't take them long to get it back to me.

yeah they do. as you can see in the pic, It has a small one above the spare tire and then one on the frame rail. They both have senders in them as well. It looks like the back one feeds into the front one. I'm not sure how I am going to attack that monster but we'll come up with something

Ok, I see now. I thought I read something else above about the frames. So my next question is, if you were just swapping the engine from frame to frame, why did you take the whole Suburban body off of its frame to put the engine in? Why not just take the front end off? Such a sweet swap, post up some more pics!!

I really didn't want to take the engine, tranny and transfer case apart and there is alot of wiring and plumbing to do so it was just as easy to take the body off. It's pretty simple to get the body off, just ten bolts and one wiring harness, then unhook heater core lines and ac lines. It made it really easy to do the swap with the body off.

Thanks and I am trying to do the best work I can on this and not cut any corners. I am trying to figure out the best setup for the fuel tanks. and on 2wd to 4wd, well i wondered the same thing. I think it wouldn't be too bad just dont know about the wiring.

The swap has been fairly straightforward and I think this will probably not be the last swap I do. :)

sorry i didn't get any pics up today. We worked mostly on getting chassis wiring ran. Also I swapped in the sending unit from duramax into suburban tank. It was a direct swap besides having to swap post from suburban sender. there were quite a few extra evap tubes, some I kept some I removed. I think I have decided now to use back tank as a back up and left the original sending unit in and going to operate it to transfer fuel to main tank via a toggle switch from in the cab. It's not ideal but for now its the best I can come up with. Tomorrow we are going to cut and flare old fuel lines and use a quality fuel line to hook up to the sending unit. Then hopefully my lift pucks will be in and we'll get the body back on tomorrow and see if she'll come alive. Also have to take it to muffler shop to get them to install the exhaust system. I will get you some pics tomorrow of the fuel tank and lines. We're also having problems with the fuel cooler and I think we may end up mounting it up front. The space is just pretty limited in the burb compared to the pickup. Also the chassis wiring harness seemed to all be in the right spot except we had to switch out the EBCM off the pickup. Let me know if you have any more pics or want pics of anything in particular.

and an update. I hade absolute hell finding the body bolts but I had the semi-local fastenal store order me some and they'll be here thursday. My donor core support was pretty messed up and I ordered one from a junk yard and it won't be here till tomorrow. Front differential is going in now. Also having a custom driveshaft made and I should have it back first thing in the morning. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to ease her over to the muffler shop to get the 4" exhaust installed. We've gotta get all the fluids drained and re-filled first though.

It's been relatively (for the size of the project) surprise free. I really haven't spent that much time on it. I didn't work on it at all this weekend and just usually a few hours a day. Hit me up if you have any questions.

Oh yeah. I also ordered the front bumper top cap from a 3/4 ton and was hoping to have the core support on so I could see if that would close the gap from the body lift so I could have it painted tonight but I guess it will have to wait till next week.

Wow Corry,
I have to hand it to you brother you are making some crazy fast time on this job, watch out on your wiring, carefully analyze and ring everything out on your donor before throwing power at your project. Also make sure you still have your dual air bag sensors under the rad support, the p/u single is not compatible with the SUV dual. We couple the fuel tanks on the return side with a tee and put the pump on a “delay off” timer so the driver can just hit a switch and the transfer takes place, then shuts off automatically. That way they don’t burn up the pump. That little pump is a low psi unit and pumps diesel just fine, when I got into this business that was something I tested for abut a month straight with a 5 gal bucket full of diesel and that pump hooked to a car charger and battery. All and all I have to say I'm impressed with your work

Switching 2x4 to 4x4 is a snap just add the weld in hardware from the donor and wire it up, I have an 03LT in here now we put a LBZ in and converted to 4x4, the sales dept wanted to show case that any GMT800 gen II SUV will take any Dmax so they brought in an 03 with a 11/02 build date and an 07 LBZ donor with a 3/07 build date. I’ll throw a video of it up on our DuraBurb channel on YouTube so you guys can all see how it’s done.

Great job Corry!!

Thanks for the compliments. Since you are the Duraburb guru it's nice to hear. That is a great idea on the timer. I have been worried about that but figured since I will prodiminately be the one filling it that a simple on/off switch. How much off a delay do I need to transfer the entire tank? I was thinking about getting someone to wire me something up where it would run until dry and shut off and not activate if below a certain level.

Now I have to start messing with the A/C lines. I knew going in that it would be one of the most difficult but I think I can figure it out. I should have the longer body bolts in by lunch and that is about all I think we are missing.

I used the suburban fuse box because of the additional inteerior components and added the lug for the glow plugs. I haven't ran the wait to start wire and am going to attack that this morning. I think that I have everything hooked up correctly and all connectors have a home so so far so good.

I used the front wiring harness w/ air bag sensors, temp sensor, light harnes etc from the suburban so all should be well there.

I had an LBZ air intake laying around so I'm throwing that on and i got the LBZ mouthpeice to so she can breathe a little better. Also went ahead and put on an egr blocker while I had it apart.

All in all it has been alot of fun. If someone was to offer me enough money for this rig in the future I would love to do it on a 900 platform. That's the main goal but we're gonna clock some miles on the 06 before we get to that point. Thanks for all the kind words and I'll try to get you a video before long.

2" body lift required.

So I got it running yesterday and drove it around about 40-50 miles. I have a few quirks that I have to work out. The gear indicator isn't working, the fuel gauge isn't working, and tranny temp not registering. Corry,
Here is your TCM answer. Your trans temp is related to the same lack of communication on the class II buss, you don't have T/H right now either even though it shows on the dash it wont change the shift pattern until you get it talking to the rest of the truck. P.S. its the yellow wire.

http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg300/thetdiguy/dualbuss.jpg

Yes 2 tanks are present in ALL 15906 & 25906 frames on both the GMT800 & GMT900 platform. Thats the only way to get 36gal in the frame rails.

Looks great Corry, now you know why we charge 5+K to to build these trucks.
How many hrs do you think you have in it realistically?

Oh yea delete the blue wire from the rear tank sender at the body connector and your Fuel gauge will work. The Dmax has a p/u wire for it but your current ECU flash cant understand the second tank reading, it only knows the purple signal so its not going to respond.
See I said I'd help you I just wanted to see how serious you were.

Well Gotta get back to the 2500HD LBZ ESV Platinum Escalade build.

Eric

Oh yea GM doesn't build these because they (regardless of what ford claims) are the worlds LARGEST truck builder, 20% over ford if you count Sierra & Silverado, the same truck. To funnel Dmax's to the SUV plant would create an even greater shortage of NEW Diesel P/Us and cause people who aren't brand loyal to move to ford or dodge, GM doesn't want to loose that position.

So why don't they add an extra shift to the assembly line or run an extra shift or two on Saturdays, maybe twice a month? I've gotta believe they could produce 4,000 more per year to meet demand.

When I'd ask the product specialists at the Auto Shows, they always said "it couldn't be done, wouldn't fit. WRONG!

I figured one rational reason for not doing the Duramax Suburban was liability...always under the impression that adding the 2" body lift would put the 400-lb extra weight of the SUV too high, raising the center of gravity and increasing the chance of a roll over. Besides, too tall a step in for many Soccer Moms.

To funnel Dmax's to the SUV plant would create an even greater shortage of NEW Diesel P/Us and cause people who aren't brand loyal to move to ford or dodge, GM doesn't want to loose that position.

yeah it's a pretty good chore but having the right equipment and tools makes it much easier. ie lifts etc. I'm not exactly clear on your picture, do I need to add a jumper wire or move a wire in that connector? I'm gonna go try to find the fuel tank wire right now. Thanks for the help.

oh and I'm not sure on the hours but the 5k would be worth it to 99% of the people. It's definitely not ripping anyone off.

Yep, look for the yellow wire on the engine side, we have found after doing this over and over again that a green wire will be present for the ECU/ECM on both body & engine side and there may or may not be a yellow for the TCM. Only it will be in the wrong location on the body side. It all depends on which plant your truck came from (I.E. VIN starts with 1 or 3) because ................

the GM gods couldn't make them all the same. DEAR GOD NO THAT WOULD BE TOO EASY!!!!!!

I had a quick question on the exhaust system. On one of your earlier post you said you ordered a kit for a CCLB. Did you end up using it or did you have a custom exhaust made ?

I just cut it up and used it. It was pretty easy and I have heard that a CCSB set up works too but I can't vouch for that.

Yep they all work fine some you add to some you cut out about 18" but an inexpensive (250.00 or so) system is the ticket as its much easier to manipulate.

Cory you get that TCM straightened out?

What did you do about voltage monitoring?

yeah eric builds some very nice vehicles. I think I have just about all the bugs worked out of mine and the wife loves it. She really didn't want a suburban but this thing is so fun to drive that she doesn't mind it. We took about a 800 mile trip this weekend and only had one small problem, the trans cooler developed a small leak but I just bypassed it and will have a new one installed tomorrow evening. For some weird reason my fuel gauge started working as we left to come home so moaybe it just fixed itself. All I have left to do is run the wire for the Wait to Start lamp and I think I'm gonna install a manual high idle switch to. This thing is WAY more fun than I ever imagined. If you are even thinking about getting one I'd say go for it.

Congrats Corry!!
Now you see what everyone who gets one of these is raving about. Stick a tuner on it and it really gets fun, You’ll be Sunday driving just for the shear pleasure, just watch out roads get real short real fast with that much power shoved under the hood of an SUV. Now imagine that much power with 2K lbs less weight in a Tahoe! Weeeeeeeeeeee:)

Yeah I have an edge w/ attitude I've been thinking about throwing on it. Just been making sure everything is right before doing so. My dang fuel gauge is possesed though, today I filled up and now it's stuck again. I really didn't want to drop the tank but I guess I may have to. And I haven't gotten the fuel filler exactly right as it still is a bear to fill up. All in all it's one AWESOME vehicle. I can't even imgaine driving a Tahoe with all this power. I would probably get into all sorts of trouble in that lol.

here's the whole album... http://s929.photobucket.com/albums/ad132/cdn111/Diesel%20Burb/
got an update though. I found a 2006 LBZ/6spd wrecked for $3200 and I'm gonna tear the burb apart and put the LBZ under the hood. I know it's kind of rediculous but I want that 6 speed bad. Then I'm going to try and use the 2 wrecks and peice together one good 2005 crew cab, short bed pickup. I guess I have too much free time on my hands..yeah right, I have a 6 day old baby lol. I will update y'all when the burb starts coming back apart.

The 06 I bought is a chassis cab though so I'm wondering since it has two tanks from the factory if I can use the wiring/senders from it and have my dual tanks in the burb work as they were installed from the factory.

The only problem I haven't solved on the burb is that it has a creeking noise from the lift pucks that I had to install so any help with them would be greatly appreciated.

Why not just put the 6 speed behind the engine in there now? Suncoast makes a conversion kit that is pretty easy to install. Now, I know I wasted my time since something is telling me you are just itching to install that lbz! Sweet project, I admire your ambition

yeah definitely wanting the LBZ!! LOL. Dont tell the wife though..told her that it's necessary. I can't wait until I get on the other side of the accelerator pedal from the LBZ in that burb.

my father-in-law found it for me. I thought it was way too good of a deal to pass up. It was a 2wd but I have the tail housing to switch it to 4wd so that's no big deal.

The LBZ is a lot of fun, but not much diesel smoke. Thats good for the wifes sake. Any duramax engine with a big tune would is cool in a suv. Good job on your build!

cdn111 switch the tail shaft? what about the output shaft? I only ask because I've only done 1 2WD but swaped out several transfer cases and the output shaft is clearly different.
