I think you'd be real lucky to get 60 - 80k out of glow plugs. The only alarm you'll get is its hard to start when its cold and blowing white smoke for a few seconds until the cylinders warm up and are all firing properly.

I am at 131,000 miles right now on a set of AC 60G glow plugs. When I was at 110,000 miles, I started my truck at -10F with those glow plugs and even surprised myself (and a few new Powerstrokes setting in the parking lot that never did start). It fired right off after the glow plug light went out, missed a little then ran smooth. Injectors are the same age.

When I changed them at 76,000 miles the OEM units were 9G's, so was glad to get rid of those. The 60G's never worked right when I changed them, but found the relay was bad as well. Started great ever since and even better with a set of timing gears which replaced the chain.

I have 135,000 on the original ones. So after you guys hit me on the head, tell me which ones are the best to use and what problems am I going to run into.

How long 'till they die? That's a variable not yet established. I used to drive a company truck non-Powerstroke 94. It could puke out plugs in as little as 9 months.

Kennedy sells good set. Site vendor/supporter.

142K miles on originals in a '95. Needed to be replaced last summer but a new set of red tops got me thru winter. Will definitely change 'em out this year as it now smokes on start up on warm days!

I replaced my Glow Plugs and got JK's quick heats, the orginals in the older trucks 9G's will swell and are a PIA to get out. I got luck and all came out and all were working when changed, I'd change then as a preventive messure after hearing all the swollen GP stories. $80 is cheap insurance.

I just bought a set of the champion glowplugs from an autoparts store, did i do the wrong thing,i haven't put them in yet, but my truck is blowing smoke on start up,, smokes the whole neighborhood. quits after warm up, I don't think my controler is cycling on and off after the initial start, don't know what to think of that one either

Can I take a resistance reading of the plug or that too much of a pain in the butt?
Thx
Sam

rayborn:
the champion glowplugs are probably not of the hightest guality. they are probably like the autolite glowplugs. the acdelco plugs are of good quality and so are the aftermarket dual coil plugs that places like kennedy and ssdieselsupply sell

idahoelkhunter:
a reistance test is possible but i think the easiest way to test if a glow plug is good or bad is to use a test light. clip the aligator clip end of the test light on a positive battery terminal and touch each glowplug. if it lights up it is good, if not then change it.
