Just got my 2009 GMC 2500HD ext cab with the factory remote start. I am wondering if there is a way to exit the vehicle and keep the truck running, taking the keys out of the truck with you. I know on my old truck (aftermarket remote start), I could press the button on the FOB, take the keys out, lock the truck, and keep it running while I went into the store. When you come back, just put the key back in and go.
PS- Love the forum so far, my first diesel, in love!

Nope I do not believe you can do that with the factory remote start. You could shut the truck off, get out, lock it then restart it with the remote start. even then it would only run for 10 min before it shut itself back down. I think aftermarket is only way you could do this. Try searching for remote start and youll find some other threads. Welcome to the forums and congrats on the truck, youll love it :D

I take the fob with me and lock the doors while the key is in the ignition.

After reading everywhere, I'm convinced that it can't be done, BUT, even with our trucks being jobsite trucks, I've never changed a starter or flywheel, and some are well past the 200k mile mark.
35-40k miles a year and up to 60 starts a day during their 4 day work week:rolleyes:.

Welcome.... If I want mine running I just seperate the fob from the key and take it with me, seems to work fine. I do agree it would be nice to take the keys but I also have not found anyone who has done it or can do it.

Deliver parts and make UPS look bad coasting to a stop with the engine already off. Always turning it off with 3 pages of stops per day. Only had the batteries fail at 88K. Would only idle for AC...

I went through 4 quick releases for my fob. Every one of them broke within a week or released on its own in my pocket. I just put my keys on a small carabiner, seperating the key from the fob. That way i can just take the fob with me and lock the truck while i leave the keys in the ignition. I havent had a problem since.
