I have a new 05 D/A and was wanting to know when I should do the first oil change? Also I would like to know what oil you would recommend using. At the first oil change is there anything else that I should do? This site is great thanks for all the help

Some people here change their oil as soon as they drive their new truck home from the dealer, & change it 2 or 3 time before 1,000 miles. That certainly isn't hurting anything, but you'll be fine if you change it at ~1,000 miles the 1st time.
I would recommend Delvac 1300 Super or Chevron Delo 400, but you'll be hard pressed to find a bad 15w-40 CI-4/CI-4+ oil on the market today.
You might want to start thinking about changing your rear diifferential fluid in the near future, too, especially if you do a lot of towing.

Got just about the same truck as you, change everything at 1000!!!! They didn't do a good job on mine, and the $hit that was in the front end I wanted to -:t

Also consider a FUMOTO oil drain plug it's well worth the $$$.

Great site this is my first post. I have a 3 day old, 2005 2500!!
My question is: If I change oil at 1,000 miles with dino oil, when would I change to full synthetic??
Thanks.

I changed mine at 500, 1000 miules and now every 5000 miles. I use Schaeffers 7000 Blended oil and good filters, no Fram.Have 6 gallons of Schaeffers oil left and if I can't a new local source ( mu supplier went out of bussiness) for it I'll change to a synthetic and extend change interval to 10k. Contemplating installing a bypass oil filter system soon. Highly recomend the Cat fuel prefilter kit that Nick sells on line.It installs on outside of frame a couple feet or so in front of the rear tire. No lift pump is required.Enjoy you new truck.

Didn't I read somewhere, either here on the DP or on "Bobstheoilguy" site that the engine oil that comes from the factory has special additives that help the engine during breakin? I know I read it somewhere, just can't remember where! :o: JJ :)

I've seen that on the VW TDI forum, but I don't think I've ever seen it for the Duramax. I'm not positive, though.:confuzeld

Change to syn with the first oil you plan to run to a full change-interval.
I did 1 at 500 and another at 1500, but I'm paranoid.
