I would like some advice and feed back. I am looking at buying a used 5th wheel trailer. It is 27ft with one large slide. I am also in the market for a new truck. My long term goal is to buy a 3/4 truck and a 30+ foot trailer with multilple slides when I retire, 10 years, and have used and maintained a diesel turck before I put down the money for a new truck and trailer. I have found a 2001 Dodge diesel truck 2WD with only 26,000 miles very clean. Does anyone have experence towing and maintaining this model truck? Any sugestions and is this a good starter truck? Oh yeh, they are asking $22,000 for the truck.

Being I work in the trailer hitch bussiness I do see a few trucks for 5th wheels for installs. 2001 Dodge trucks are not to bad just look out for front oil seal leaks on the Cummings engine. Look also where the 5th wheel will mount to see if the frame has been modified at all. The worst thing you will have to do is maybe install airbags on it. On a worst note if it is an automatic I would stay clear of it because there is alot of trouble in the tranny.

My Son has had 3 Dodge diesels and still drives one. Absolutely zero problems with the Cummins. The auto trannys have all had problems.

if you go with a diesel for towing you will not be disappointed. When you pull a long hill you can look behind you and find not all but most gassers falling behind. Also you will like it when the same trucks are hauling the same trailers, following each other,(diesel breaking trail of course) and the gasser's fuel gauge is in the red and you still have 3/8 of a tank.

The downfall is currently higher fuel costs and higher initial cost.

I hope I never have to go back to a gasser, but it would be better than no truck at all.
