Ok I know little if anything about transmissions. What I do know is too much horsepower = boom boom. Heres my situation. Price is not that big an issue but I am still frugal. MY best friend has a 1 ton dodge, an 04 CC with a bullydog programmer on 130 and an air raid intake. He put a converter in his truck and now it shifts real crisp and is a lot more durable, dependable, whatever you wanna call it. He believes his tranny is now safe from 4 high launches and stompin all over town as long as he doesnt exceed 500hp. That is about as high as I want to go, 500hp. Will doing a converter alone do anything for our allisons, will it make my tranny safe up to 500 hp? I thought about going all the way and doing the suncoast V but then heard that it doesnt include a converter and is also still weak without new input shafts. Can someone please chime in, someone who knows, (Hey Hoot im talkin to you!) and let me know if it will be beneficial to just do a converter, or if it will be something I will regret a few thousand miles down the road.
thanks

I would love to hear the reasoning behind the thought that a different converter makes the internals able to take more power...that makes zero sense.

like i said I know nothing about trannys so I too would like to hear the reasoning. He and his other dodge friends say that doing the converter elimnates all slippage though, which in turn eliminates the danger of blowing the thing up. the reasoning behind my coming here to ask is because I have my doubts that they really know what theyre talking about.

Sounds like he might have bought into some "banks" hype. Catch the last two episodes of extreme 4x4?

a converter and valve body will do wonders for a Dodge trans, but the Allison is a different animal. Not sure where you heard that the SC V does not include a converter as it is typically figured as part of it. It is avail with out of course as well though
My advice on any Ally upgrade......? Overbuild it as much as you can afford.

Remember what the function of the converter is............ it's entire purpose is to transfer the power from the engine into the transmission. With this in mind a converter can be made that is stronger, so it will be able to hold 500 Hp, it can be made as a single or triple plate and so on, but it will not make the transmission any stronger than it was to start with. To make the transmission stronger you need to upgrade the transmission too.

will it eliminate tranny slippage?
if it does wont that make for a much more reliable and tougher transmisson?
am i wrong in thinking that excessive slipping is what causes dangerously high temps. and eventually destruction?

It will only eliminate slippage that is from the converter and will do nothing for the transmissione slippage if present. When rasing the Hp to above stock the transmission will slip the C2 and C3 clutch packs as well as the torque converter clutch which is in the torque converter. So you need to upgrade both the torque converter and the transmission to handle the power level you wish to go too.
