Took my truck in for what i thought was a leaking front diff. Turned out being a bad steering gear. My steering was always tight and i have the cognito pitman and idler brace. After leaving the dealership with the new unit i have so much free play that driving down the interstate in a cross wind felt dangerous. The dealership said bring it back and we will put in another one. I asked if i could have a new instead of reman and they said they have to put what gm calls for which is a reman. Truck is still under warranty. The mechanic told me that he has put two or three in the same truck before they get one that feels good. If it takes that many i will be calling the bbb for this should be a safety issue. Wouldn't it be better for gm to replace it once with a good unit then doing it multiple times with junk.

Should i allow them to tighten it? I have been told this is a last resort.

I work at a Ford dealer and they call for reman parts for certain repairs. Its the same crap you get at any parts store, its supposed to be rebuilt to manufactures specs but sometimes its just junk right out of the box and you keep putting them on until you get a good one. The dealer should have road tested it, verified it was bad, and put another one on until it was fixed properly.

Quick question, I have a lot of looseness in my steering and although my tires still turn and such, I found out that my passenger side diff where it meets the cv joint has developed some sort of leak, was that the same thing you had?

My truck is long past warranty. I recently, over the last 2 months, have gone through three AC Delco reman'd boxes. Three is no exaggeration. Every box was worse than the original box. I'd had enough. Called spoke with Lance at PSC in Azle Texas. I had my PSC box installed this last Friday. Night and day difference. Great box. Wish I would have done the PSC box first, would have saved a considerable amount of frustration and cost.

Well the dealership has just put the third one on. It is alot better but not as tight as the first. I'm tired of dealing with it so i guess my only choice is live with it or buy a aftermarket one.

I was looking online...the newest model that I found was for an 04...do you know where an 06 could be found?

I was told by a buddy that the procedure is to bench adjust the gear lash prior to install. My new reman box was loose as well. You can also tighten them while installed...thats what I did. I dont think they adjust them properly from the factory...

Yeah a link would be sweet if it's out there...I want to try the PSC on the next round.

I have to agree with this I bought a gm one and it was the same if not worse than the one that came of my truck. The whole front end is brand new with all the cognito goodies but I still have slop or play in the wheel. I did try tightening the old one I had on before I changed it and not sure if I did it right or not but it didn’t take any slop out just seemed to make the steering slightly harder to turn. I was always told in school to not adjust them I thought.

Does anyone have a spec on how to adjust them? The new box has a 1 year warranty through gm but I rather not put 3 of them on till I get a good one if I can just adjust it.
