Hi everyone...the machine is still new (around 350 miles) and the only thing that worries me is the oil pressure at idle. When idleing, the engine runs IIRC around 30 PSI. (basically the first hash mark that is out of the red zone) Cruising on the highway at 70 mph the oil press is up around 50-55 PSI. Should I be worried about this? If this is normal pressure for a dmax, whats the point of having a 120 PSI gauge?? (versus the gassers' 80 lb. gauge).

thanks again--- Ben

sounds about right to me, My 05 has 3500 on it now and it has run about that since I got it. It's not the pressure, it's the volume of oil you move. These oil pumps move lots of oil. Thats one of the reasons they hold 10 qts of oil IMO.

:exactly:the same I have and most others with the LLY. The reason you need the 120 lb. gauge is that during the winter months when it's cold you'll get about 80 lbs. pressure.

Sounds about right. Mine runs at about the same PSI...... Congrats on your new truck!

+1, mine runs right around that too, and it only has 78 miles at this point.

Just bought a 2005 Dmax myself 385 miles on the truck and my LLY is the exact same way so I wouldn't worry.

It sounds normal to me. i wouldn't worry. my LB7 runs around 30 at idle when warmed up. close to 80 if i just started it when cold. 50-60 cruising down the highway.

24000 miles on mine and it has been like that since day 1. No problem there, run 'er till she blows!!!

28K on mine, my pressure is 30 idle & 55-60 at 1600rpm (hot) since new.. what your seeing is normal.
cold start in winter = ~80

40K on mine, and ditto to the oil pressure.

2005 with 5000 miles same results, 30 @ idle 55-60 over the road and 80 when cold in N E winter. Good Luck

19,000 on my LLY. About 30 psi oil pressure with the engine warm and at idle, and about 55 to 60 while cruising at 70 on the freeway.
You also have to remember, oil pressure can and will change depending on the viscosity of the oil in the engine.
Just wait till it is below feeezing outside and you start her up cold, when you see 90+ psi  on that gage you will just about freak.

Mine is the same way. Several months ago I put a mechanical gauge on the engine and it showed 20 lbs more than the dash gauge. I had the dealer replace the sending unit and it still shows low. I don't know what to do about it at this point, I don't really want them to tear the dash out of it and still not fix it. Sounds like a design problem if this many people see it.

When I picked mine up about 2 weeks ago I was concerned as well, good too hear my concerns are unneccessary! I'm use to gas engines and race engines that run rediculous pressures, getting to know and understand diesel engines is a learning process.

I tow 6-14k 50% of the time. The oil pressure will tank pretty quick in the summer! There is a solution, if it is a problem? Try a bosch 3510 oil filter and or Lucas oil stablizer (any truck stop, some auto parts stores) about $20 a gallon. I use 1qt winter and 2qts in the summer at each change for 3yrs now, Quiet motor, cooler temps and oil pressure that'll please the GODS!:driver:

Sounds right here. In the old days we were all trained you only need one pound of oil pressure for every one hundred rpms. Sounds scary but true.:exactly:

Ahh everyone here is great!! Thanks a lot to everyone for the help...

...just smoked a ricer at a stop light..the turbo spooled up and away I went!!! gotta love the VVT.

Glad I did a search on "oil pressure" -- exact same thing I was worried about. Mine has all of 170 miles on it and I was wondering if GM put a lighter "break-in" oil in the crank case to start. Mine is 20 - 25 psi (estimate from gage) when hot at idle, but 55 psi sounds right at cruise. I was hoping it would jump when I change the oil to Delo 15/40 at 1k miles, but I guess I won't worry if it doesn't...

My truck runs the same pressures everyone else has quoted.

30psi is actually a good bit of pressure. In racing we used low pressure switches to kill the ignition if the pressure fell below 7psi.

So at 30psi you still have over 4 times more than the pressure many racers consider the minimum in engines turning way way more rpm than our dmax's will ever see!

Yes I raced Porsches down in Texas in the early to mid '90s as well... 1 Bar per 1K rpm was always the rule, so I guess I shouldn't worry at all...:)

Guess I better update my sig. so y'all can see what my truck is...:o:

It gets scary low at idle if you run the Rotella Synthetic.
Doesn't seem to be a problem though.

Synthetics do generally have less resistance to flow and therefore less pressure is developed. Other drivers have noticed this upon switching to synthetics.

Add me to the "same also" list.

I have a 05-LLY coming up on 900 miles. Last week I noticed my oil pressure would make big swings in pressure- from 60 psi @ 1800 rpm down to 30 psi-ish at idle. All sorts of things started running through my head- dealer battles, loan payments on a truck in the shop etc.. But things just didn't seem right- Thanks to everyone images/smilies/smile.gif on this thread not only have you cleared up this common "running condition", but more importantly a piece of mind (good nights sleep).

P.S> my truck also has the tick/tick on driver side, I thought it was just a sticker or somthing on one of the belts, but is still ticking faintly at idle.

Thanks....

If you are asking about the tick, it'll go away. Unless it gets really bad (you will know it when it happens) Don't worry about it. The General owns this motor for the next 5 years or 100,000 miles.
