The gear selector indicator has been acting up for a little while on our 04 Chevy. The truck is completely stock and never been chipped. Today I was backing up and then put it in Drive. The truck rearend "slipped" and it felt like I was rear ended. The gear indicator wouldn't show that is was in drive, neutral, or park. I shifted into neutral and then back to drive and it did it again. It would not upshift and would go over 2K rpms easy. I turned it off and then it shifted normal, but the indicator is still messed up. The check engine light is on, but I haven't gotten the codes read yet (It could be from my egr).

Thanks in advance,
-Brad

Maybe it was a fluke? because I just started it up and it shifted normally.

Had the same thing happen to me with my 01. Had a heck of time trying to find the problem. Ended up being alternator overcharging. Truck would lock up when trying to shift, acually squeel the back tires, tranny not shift, no selector indicator, interior lights would go out, heater & air would shut down. All kinds of wierd stuff. New alternator no more problems. The alternator was charging @ 18 volts. I just happened to see it pegged out early one morning & chked it. The big problem was it was intermittent.

The problem sounds electrical. Common problems are NSBU switch and ignition switch.

That is awesome. We have been having electrical issues too, but couldn't figure out what the deal was. I'll have the alternator tested.

After you start your truck what does the volt meter do. How far does it jump up after the startup. Is it past 15 volts? The way I caught the problem was to have head lights, interior lights & AC on right after start up. The volt meter would show discharge for a period of time then jump clear to 18+ not to 14 volts. But it would not do this all the time.
Good Luck

Alternator tested fine, and no trouble codes. It seems to do it when it is shifted into reverse, then drive. It was fine earlier. Also, the power door locks don't unlock when shifted into park now, even though the setting is still the same...

Sounds like your NSBU switch is bad.

I actually ordered an NSBU switch earlier today. Should be in at the Allison dealer tomorrow. The guy said it was 48 dollars!!

Update:

Got the switch earlier and it was $51.94 with tax (updated tan switch). If you are in the Katy, Tx area or by I10, go to Rush Truck Center (Peterbilt dealer) Took 20 minutes to install because the dielectric grease turned to glue on the wiring connectors. Fixed all my problems. Thanks to all!!
