or can i use flex pipe for a Downpipe? will they usually take 1400 degrees or anything like that

I would doubt that flex pipe would last long hooked up to a turbo, but I could be wrong.
The original downpipe is 2 3/4" with lots of crushed areas added to ensure clearance and no rattles against the frame/body. Some were much worse looking that others. My original wasn't too bad, but the new 3" pipe works better, even though it may touch the frame now and then. I can feel a hum through the floor boards when that happens.

Remember after your turbo egt's are reduced about 300 degrees. Flex pipe is widely used in semi's near the base of the stack. I plan on using a flex pipe downpipe when I turbo my 6.2 but it will be temporary.

I have a NA 6.5 and finally got the truck up in the air this week. That downpipe from the manifold is hideous, crush sections the whole length. Can most muffler shops fab up a good 2.5" mandrel bent replacement or does it have to be heavier stuff because of the heat? Bear in mind, this is a non-turbo, only 155hp/275tq 6.5 diesel; I don't know if the exhaust needs a little restriction for flow or some-such. I don't even know if it'll increase power. Probably not.

Yeah most muffler shops can do that for you, nope the pipe is nothing special. Gas engines you do have to have some back pressure (or restriction like you said) but diesels do the best with the least restriction possible. You probably would get a slight increase in power and a little better mileage.

You mean the Y pipe, only a turbo has the downpipe, if you think the y pipe is bad, you should see the downpipe!

Whats a reasonable cost for a complete straight pipe exhaust off the manifold? $700?

That's way high.

A friend just bought a full turbo back exhaust with a muffler(as he plows in the early hours) for $280 i believe.

Thats a lil expensice. I got a 4" complete turbo back for 300 bucks shipped to my front door.

Cool, thanks. My other car is a BMW which has a gougetastic aftermarket. An axleback exhaust made of high grade stainless steel and nice tips costs a minimum of $700 plus shipping.

edit: crap, I just looked around and nobody makes a system for the NA 6.5L diesel. Plenty of cheap turbo systems though. :(

You didn't look very hard. Banks makes a system. Rather spendy and not very rust resistant. Hearthrob exhaust in litchfield, Mn may make one. Good quality and reasonable price. They may offer it in stainless steel. They make exhaust for many other co's. SS diesel supply, accurate diesel, J.C. whitney just to name a few.

Banks does not make a non turbo 6.5L diesel exhaust.
SS Diesel Supply does not make a non turbo 6.5L diesel exhaust.
Accurate Diesel does not make a non turbo 6.5L diesel exhaust.
JC Whitney does appear to have a NA 6.5L diesel system. http://www.jcwhitney.com/DIESEL-PERFORMANCE_COMPLETE_4_SINGLE_EXHAUST_SYSTEMS?ID=1 2;0;200007648+1994+1101015855;0;100001;ProductName ;17;0;0;0;2006402;0;0 Its actually a Heartthrob system which either I can't find or isn't listed on Heartthrob's website.

All the other manufacturors you listed only have models listed specifically for "Turbo Diesel" or "TD" 6.5L diesel engines on their websites.

I'm going to see how much a local shop can fab one for. Thanks though.

I think you will find that there is not very much of an aftermarket for the naturally aspirated motors.

If you want a performance add on, pretty much have to fab it up.
As a matter of fact, the first modification most people do on the N/As is to throw a turbo on them!

Really?! At $5k/kit, I doubt that is something I'll ever consider. Too bad. :P

Hearthrob had it listed on their web site less than a year ago. If you call them I'd bet they can make one up for you. The 6.2 n/a is the same exhaust as long as it's for the 88-98 body style. I had a banks stinger system on my 91 k2500LD 6.2. I see banks doesn't list that system any more either.
The price for a banks turbo kit is crazy. All you need is the passenger side exhaust manifold, crossover pipe, turbo.and oil supply and return. Should be able to pick up used for under $1000. Gain 40+ HP

Don't you need 18:1 pistons to lower the compression? Or can you put a turbo on the engine and just run low boost? Either way, it sounds like a lot of fun. I enjoy a good project, but this one will have to wait until after my deployment. I think I'll just keep the exhaust stock for now and plan upgrades later.

Stock 6.5 turbo motors are the same as n/a compression. 18to 1 compression is custom. 18:1 will allow more boost.

You can actually rob a turbo set up off of a 6.5 for pretty cheap.
I got a complete setup for my 6.2, for $250, I will have about $400 in it all said with gauges, air filter, etc.
